I have been spending lots of time and effort getting my products advertised on Free Classified Ads worldwide. However it was not very effective in terms of the number of sales I had over these day.
I wonder if I should still keep doing this. I have an impression that most visitors of these sites are spammers rather than potential customers.

Any thoughts?

In order to get the potential customer for your website.. the SEO is the best option for you. And potential customers comes from the Directory submission you will do. Second Relevant niche blogs !!

You can hire a web developer with Search Engine Optimization knowledge, it advantageous to spend to truly optimize your site.
Or learn how to optimize your website for Google and other search engines, and reading blogs and forums about SEO. Today, search engines look at much more than just metadata. They look at everything from tags to video clips to what words are on your web page.

An estimated 73% of new website visitors come from search engines. Google, MSN Search, Yahoo! and Ask Jeeves currently account for a 94% UK market share of search marketing. Within this group, Google dominate with a massive 70% of UK searches (and 59% in the US). Furthermore, the volume of searches being carried out by Google has increased by 77% year-on-year since its inception (Moran and Hunt, 2008)... (source:Freelanceidol.com)

Oh the title of this post is not very telling of what we're discusisng here. It should be 'It's not very effective to advertise on Free Ads'

I wasted some money on Google SEM -- though they were very helpful and helped me write ads tailored made for my site. Traffic increased significantly but sadly the sales generated could not cover my SEM expense by far. So I've given up using SEM to boost my traffic. Also my market is very competitive and anyone seems to compete in price rather than quality. My products are of high quality, and therefore the cost is higher. This nearly perfect competition market is driving my profit away!

Also for a start up it is hard to get enough financial backing to hire SEO specialists, so I have to do everything on my own. Sadly I am not an IT guy.

I've learnt many IT things during these days.

According to the 2008 - 2009 survey about 90 % users come from the Google Search engine just because of the reason Google has done great job in Online marketing and they have great products for SEO like Google Analytic or Google ad words..
