Starting on ebay will keep your costs low and allow you to test the market.

My vote is to try the product on ebay and if it goes well look to having your own website.

ebay will have a higher cost per sale but a low fixed startup cost. A website will have a higher fixed startup cost but should have a lower cost per sale due to no listing fee. Though that is ignoring promotion cost your website.

agreed, its costs next to nothing to get going on ebay

you can gain some valuable experience and a little exposure. If your business takes off you can then plan on setting up a proper store

Will your product be competitive on ebay?

Start on eBay. Once you start getting successful, launch a store to support eBay. Sell for cheaper on online store so that you get the same amount of money in your pocket after.

When you're ready to create your website, send me a PM and I will setup a website for you.

Also, as much as I agree with the comments, I set up my website free, I found a free template to use and built it up, we had no web design or java script knowledge we learnt it ourselves (you do need to be technical minded I suppose) There is also free hosting although we decided to go through a reputable hosting company for £10.00 a month.

To open an ebay shop you have to pay £14.99 a month plus a sellers fee which im not sure of exact figures but its something like 0.20p per item - this is if you open up an ebay shop - you can of course open up a personal account and sell for free with a seller fee?

I have my own website which you can order direct and its straight advertising for minimum cost compared to EBAY where it would cost me more

Just a slight different angle for you to think about?xx:)

the advantage with ebay is you have canned traffic included in the price

open an ebay shop, and your own online shop, and with every order you send out from ebay include a voucher, eg "quote code Freegift1 with every order on our site and recieve a free item with every order or you could give 10% discount or something, this will encourage customers from ebay to visit your site, and once they have bought from you it is them possable to add them to your mailing list for further promotions and once you have enough customers to your online shop you can say byebye to ebay :)

We have many Ebayers who added their own site later. Agree - start with Ebay - you get an instant market - go Ebay first. Look at a website and costs as you grow your sales. Most of our clients keep both.

hello, it really will cost u much time and money if u get a website, u should pay to advertise it, and u should pay for the professional persons. so i think the best for u at the very beginning, is that u shop on ebay.
good luck, guy.
u know i have a website of my own now, so i really know what it is .maybe u can have a visit of shoppinglucky.com
good luck, guy:)

The voucher idea is a great option; one of our customers is amongst the largest retailers of perfume on ebay, but have recently followed this route with decent success, though they havent eliminatd their ebay sales account.

I'd check the fine print on ebay before trying this.
