Hi,

I have been trying to calculate the taxes and NI that I need to pay as part of a contract under a Umbrella Company last year.

I was working as a contractor and my payroll was being processed by an Umbrella Company who were charging me 10% for their services. However, paying the employers NI was in my part of this equation.

My hourly rate was 12 GBP with a weekly commitment of 37.5 hours making a Gross Total of 450 per week. However, the Umbrella Company used to run monthly payrolls and hence I am left with the following payslips for the months from december 2008 to March 2009

Date Gross Sal NI PAYE-TAX NET-Sal
31/12/2008 3240.00 306.57 547.20 2386.23
31/01/2009 1065.00 67.21 112.20 885.59
28/02/2009 1620.00 128.37 223.20 1268.43
31/03/2009 1202.00 82.61 139.60 979.79

I was hoping if someone could advise me if I am owed a Tax and NI return.

I would really appreciate any help that I could get.

Thanks and Regards,
M

The tax is calculated on your total income for the year. Did you have a job before December 08 and what were the P45 figures?

No, I came to the country in July and this was my first job that year till April of 2009.

I believe that I am owed a refund in the vicinity of about 1000 pounds, but would like to confirm from a more learned source.

Thanks again.

Very quick calc based on above and assuming full personal allowance for year:

gross £7127

PA £6475

Subject to tax at 20% = £652

Tax £130.40

Tax paid £1022.20

So assuming no other income rebate is £892 (approx and loads of caveats!! - like me reading the figures correctly because they are not lined up well!)

Thanks,

You are very right in your assumptions that full PA is utilised for these earnings alone as they were my only earnings for the year.

I am sorry I couldnt do a better job at aligning them as I cant post a MS-XL type table in this forum.

What are the other caveats you talked about??? How can I claim the taxes back?

On the p60 for the year, it says

Pay = 7127.00
Tax Deducted = 1022.20
Final Tax Code of 603L M1

If that is of any help.

I didnt have a NI Number at that time and hence the NI number field is Blank, but NI has been deducted.

Thanks again,
M

i am getting the feeling that the employer has made a cock up here, u said the tax code was 603L m1. and u didnt have a job before dec. did the employer get you to complete a P46 when you started? if so what statement did you tick? if it was statement A the employer should of had you on a cumulative code and not m1, and you wudnt have paid tax in the 1st place. if they didnt get u to complete a p46, they should have put u on a BR code. this is the think i hate, folk are quick to knock hmrc employees, but there are sooooooooo many times that it is actually the EMPLOYER that is wrong!!!!

You should write a letter to your local tax office listing each of the jobs above (include the company name). Then ask them for a refund.

Simples!
