adding email to signatures

Can someone please advise how to add an email link to signatures? I have tried using BBCode as shown below but does not work.

just add the mail address with no code and no other characters except spaces immediately either side

Crus - there are no spaces at all. I think this appears to have been disabled

thats what I meant about no spaces. [email]

maybe the option has been disabled :-)
