Hi All,
i was just wondering of this idea, is it a good idea to link a website you are trying to promote in Google rankings to the footer of another business website you have so that every page that your other website has the link to the site. does this increase links ina good way or bad in googles eyes?

Instead of doing a sitewide footer link I would recommend placing a link in the body text of an article no more than one link away from your homepage. Tis more natural then. (better there than 100 links from the homepage) In fact, if you have 2 websites of a similar theme then you would be daft not too!
Alt, if you have a section on your homepage you can incorporate a relevant link into then that would be a tad better.
Are both sites hosted on the same server? This may deplete link juice a bit however regardless of that, link them up from somewhere, you may not see much of a ranking change but it will certainly contribute to your overall authority and popularity.
EDIT: If both sites are on the same subject and have good keyword rich domains of a similar nature, a sitewide may be OK. I would need to look over both sites to give my "best opinion" only opinion of course.

In which case I would write up a nicely optimised article and include your links in there to your packaging site. This way the link will be relevant. If you link to that article direct from the homepage of your e-commerce site this will give you the maximum link juice (or any other high PR page from your e-commerce website)
