We're in the final build stage of our IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system for the virtual PBX. (You know, press 1 for Sales, 2 for Admin, 3 for Silly Walks)
Next week we will send our list of department names to the Voice Artist to record them. I need a list of the most appropriate ones so that users can pick them off a drop down menu. (This is the basic service; later people will be able to add their own specific ones or record their own)
Can you add to this list?

Hitler Youth ?
Just as an aside, I find these systems work best with one or two options, not a list of ten. A tiered sytem with two or three keypresses to give an 123>123>12 option tree.
Assitance might be useful if someone gets lost in the IVR, although you could probably use reception.
Also' the mailbox of' and phone for pre/appending to peoples name ie Joe Bloggs Mailbox
Hope this helps.

Blimey, I don't think I would listen to the end of a list that long....and people like to listen to a whole list before picking so that they can be sure there isn't a more relevant option later - who'd remember the right number for any option?
More than 4 is a call killer.

I don't think he is proposing to use all of them, but to make all of them avaiable for users to build their own lists by selecting from the pre-recorded voices.

That's right, it's a self service voice response system we're building to add to the PBX product. Is easier to understand if you see it. There's work in progress here:
https://www.voipfone.co.uk/EXAM_Virtual_Assistant.php
You pick a department name and then attach it to an extension number or the call queue.
It's cheaper to get all the recordings done at once than to go back for individual ones as they're requested - I'm just trying to get as long a list as possible.
Most small businesses will only need two or three departments - Sales, Spport, etc and often they'll all be answered by the same guy!

I was going to suggest a button that keeps you on hold for ages and plays stupid music........

Seriously though,
don't Virgin have some option on their automated service that allows you to choose a different piece of music to listen to, so if you don't like the piece they have chosen, they will play something else. This happened to me when I registered my mobile phone.
So:
Press 1 for heavy metal
Press 2 for Chamber music
Press 3 for R & B.......
:D :D

Probably making you call an 0870 number too ;-)
That's quite a nice idea tho' in a way. We'll be adding the ability for the business to choose what music they play to their customers at some point but hadn't thought of letting the custome choose what they want to hear....

I think with Virgin, they didn't give me a choice exactly (just jesting with you there :D ), but they did say something along the lines of "if you want to change the music you are listening to, press 2 etc"
I didn't quite get the chance to do it though, cause someone picked up (now how often does THAT happen  )

How about "just press 1 to speak to a person" ? I HATE menus, especially when I use skype because it doesnt work !

They dont always do that though - "I'm sorry your response was not recognised please choose from the following 50 selections"
