View Full Version : Blog on the site URL - can you clear this up for me

Hi there
I note reading the basic SEO thread that you're a knowledgeable bunch on this forum - and so wanted to ask if you can clear up something for me. I was advised to move both my blogs - to my site domains (initially the Carvill On Marketing blog had it's own domain as the sole purpose was to build authority) - I was advised that the blog was performing quite well and so a friend of mine advised that I should move it to my main domain. This has now happened - and similarly I have copied this tactic in my second blog.

The sites themselves were created years ago without any SEO consideration at all plus they don't have a CMS - so I use the blogs to refresh content and share via social media platforms to encourage traction. So I'm working backwards from an SEO perspective - trying to tidy up basic SEO stuff on the sites (including site maps, permalinks and titles, headers etc) and add traction to the site via the blogs.

My question is - if I get a link back to the url http://www.carvillcreative.co.uk/blog - is that adding anything to the www.carvillcreative.co.uk site? Similarly with www.logotastic.co.uk/blog and www.logotastic.co.uk site?

Sorry to ponder what may be obvious to you - but I'd really appreciate any clarification. (And any tips too!).
Many thanks
Michelle

well it isnt really an easy answer. there are pros and cons for both to be honest. what concerns me is that you are advertising online marketing on your site and yet you are unsure about this. surely you have to advise others on this sort of thing.

in short if it is on your site then at least you have extra content regularly and can interlink within the site. you could syndicate the webcontent and get deep links into the site etc.

outside the site you can link into the site and market the blog in its own right.
:)
often an amalgamation of the two is best and maybe do both.

i think it is probably the least of your worries the site needs basic optimisation quickly and if your marketing and designing i dont think it is a good portal for your work as it stands. maybe get the basics right before worrying about the blogs?

Yes and no.

It really depends on how your internal linking is set up. Looking your blog I'd say there is no advantage as there doesn't apepar to be a link between the two.

BTW. Did you know there is a 'insert more tag' icon that adds a seperator to your posts so you don't end up with the world's longest homepage.

Have a watch of this,

http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-microsite-mistake

It explains why it is almost always a good idea to keep all of your content on one single domain.

Thanks guys - really appreciate your feedback - and Barry - yes, I'm very much aware of the poor SEO consideration on both of these sites. As stated, I'm working backwards - as naively SEO wasn't considered when they were put together some years ago. So have got a partner on the case to fix up the basic stuff. Many thanks again. Michelle

The main site has hardly any content so why not move everything over to the blog. It would take a few moment to create the necessary pages. Even better, move the blog to the site root.

Highly reccommend doing all the seomoz videos.
