Hi you clever seo geniuses ,
I have been playing,(emphasis on playing hasn't taken over my life yet), around the past couple of months trying to get a site to do well for terms "electician birmingham, and "birmingham electrician",
Now i discovered from trying to get good quality free backlinks to various test sites a directory which i have managed to get here (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4ADBS_enGB297GB297&q=electrician+birmingham&start=10&sa=N):eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: the second one down on page two
Could i get this directory link, To sit in the top six results on the page one of google,
Give it to me straight i can take it, thanks for reading,
Nick

:) yeah,
It will be good for the directory they cover it in sponsord listings.

Any page you want could be SEO'd to page one. 'Electrician birmingham' is not a competitive term and getting the top spot should actually be very easy.

"actually easy" i wouldn't go that far, im probably lacking that extra knowledge that people have on this forum.
Do you want the username and password to the hotfrog directory , put your money where you mouth is? :D

Yes you are right, i have discovered it though
i was right the first time, its 3rd one down for the one phrase and 3rd from bottom of the other phrase, i need to get an early nyte.
But i had a test site for those phrases on yahoo, and im position one 90% of the time, i have linked from the yahoo well ranked site to the directory listing, so hopefully when it all gets indexed you should see the directory sitting on page one of google!

Oh it is though compared to some terms out there. Look at the top ranking sites for the term you're after. They have barely any backlinks, poor content and poor on-site SEO. If you learn up on some SEO for a few hours you could outrank them quite comfortably.

Why would I want a username and pass for a directory? Don't you have an actual website you want to reach the top spot with?

I'm 3rd on that list, the quality of leads have been pretty awful, I think I need to concentrate on getting a site on page 1 rather than directories I'm tryin to take the easy route,

Your correct, I'm losing sight of the goal , I'm gonna do some more keyword research and see where the site iv Been tinkering with drops in.
The main reason I think those sites are ranking high are there age and keyword domains,
owel I'll keep thinking

Directories are all well and good but what you really need is a top ranking website. If you can get on the number one spot with a good domain name, keyword rich, relevant, content, title tags, back links etc then you would increase the amount of quality leads.
Good luck!

waste of time hot frog usually ranks well but anything you do personally wont have much effect let hot frog look after their site and stick to yours.

You're quite right, though some people won't get it. :)
I wrote about this a few years ago on SEOmoz:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-beat-the-google-sandbox
If SEO is about generating targeted traffic via search engines, and links are a pivotal part of increasing a site’s visibility for significant keywords, we need to think outside of the normal SEO box.
Let’s not link build for our own new domains.
Link build for other people's older domains instead.
If you want to beat the Google Sandbox then don’t directly link build for your target small business site.
Instead set up your own content and links on more authoritative third-party sites, and link build for these pages instead.
If you can get a listing on third-party sites where active links are allowed, you are effectively setting up third-party validation of your target website via links from relatively older, more trustworthy, and authoritative domains.
By link build I’m talking about volume link building methods that won’t have much chance of success on your target domain – but can get away with it on more established sites.

Just because it's currently all directories on page one doesn't mean you can't get a top ranking website up there though, surely?
My point was that if you are investing time and effort in something it makes more sense in the long term for the thing you are investing in to be wholly yours and promoting wholly your brand where possible.

your suggesting I should try and out perform YELL.com .............. ok

your suggesting I should try and out perform YELL.com .............. ok
It's not difficult. Yell's Birmingham electrician page only has an average SEO authority with few backlinks. Granted their overall site is quite powerful from an SEO perspective, but it's the individual page which counts.
If you make a strong index page with lots of optimised content and good on-site SEO, then you could comfortably overtake Yell without a great deal of effort.
Just look at some of the pages on the top spot like 'Adkinsontime'. That isn't even a UK site. All it has going for it is a few backlinks and slight domain age of a few years.
