i know there was a bit of a mix up, ahem , with incorrect tax code notifications being sent out by HMRC recently. well, i got a new code, i rang them yesterday & was given another new code, but i'm still confused...
for previous years i've had the standard tax code, 2009/10 647L.
i get notice that it will be 1T for 2010/11, this is an 'under review' code i think?
queried it yesterday, i'll be getting a further new code of 72L for 2010/11.
my circumstances haven't changed in any way whatsoever...:|
any ideas?
thanks :)

They obviously think (to the limited extent that thinking is involved in the process) that you have other income and have allocated part of your coding against that. Does the employer's name on the coding tally with your normal employer? Sometimes there are two or three codes for different sources of income, not all issued at the same time. Sometimes there are two codes on the same day, but they don't time stamp them so we have no idea which one is the later.
This year, more than ever, the process is a shambles.

The coding notice itself should show you in detail why your code has changed and how your allowances are being split buried in the detail towards the bottom of the front page. So, rightly or wrongly, you can at least see what has happened.

my employer name is all fine, nothing changed there. i'll just wait for the new coding to come through & see what it says, no doubt i'll be calling them again after that!
can't say the guy on the helpline gave me much confidence, i told him my normal earnings & he disappeared & came back with a new code. i asked how that was made up -
him "well you earn xx"
me "no, you've halved the amount i said?!"
him "oh, hang on..."
really! you just can't get the staff these days! :D

Oh Dear, poor you. As David rightly says, this year seems to be even worse than usual with our friends at HMRC. If you don't receive a paper notification giving an explanation of how they arrive at the code within the next few days, get back to them and say you want it sent out today! When you do eventually get a corrected code check straight away with your employer that they also have received the latest and correct one. Hope you get it sorted out before your first April pay day.

In my experience the only outcomes from a phone call to HMRC are:
- increase in blood pressure
- a waste of my valuable time
A letter is best

I recieved my tax code re-directed from an address I have never heard of!
The actual letter had this "other address" on it but over this was placed a sticky label on which my correct address was neatly handwritten.
I assume that my taxcode was sent to the wrong person, who somehow found out my address then forwarded the letter on to me but I really cannot be sure!

We have had three employees all on different payrolls receiving a 1T tax code, and surprise surprise they have also had no change whatsoever in employment. Looks like this may be a recurring issue....
We've also had a lot of people getting a 647L tax code and a BR tax code. HMRC claim the employer has submitted a P46/P45 twice creating a duplicate record - our systems don't allow it so we know they are lying!
