Bristol Twitterati back global charity fundraiser

Bristol’s twittering masses will join thousands of other people around the world for a night of fundraising, fun and frolics on Thursday 25 March.

The second annual Twestival event is a worldwide campaign that has flourished from its humble beginnings in February 2009.

As part of the two hundred plus parties taking place across the world on 25 March, the location for the Bristol event, sponsored by Bristol-based digital publishing company Sift, is The Tunnels; an inspirational venue housed under two converted railway arches near Brunel’s original office at Temple Meads Station.

In 2009, the Bristol Twestival raised over £1500 for charity:water with the combined global funds helping to install a much needed fresh-water well in an Ethiopian village. This year, the fundraising efforts are for Concern Worldwide, an international humanitarian organisation transforming the lives of the world's poorest, most marginalised children through education.

The 2010 event is set to be bigger and better than ever with the increase in the number of people using Twitter. Bristol organisers have set a fundraising target of £3,000.

Dan Martin, editor of BusinessZone.co.uk and lead organiser of the Bristol Twestival, comments: “If this year’s party is even half as good as last year’s, everyone who comes will have a fantastic time!

“Our venue for 2010 couldn’t be more perfect given the association with Bristol icon Isambard Kingdom Brunel and we look forward to raising thousands of pounds for Concern Worldwide.

“While much of the activity for Twestival is driven by Twitter the event has a real community feel and is a great way for the people of Bristol to come together on the same day as communities around the world to raise money for a great cause.”

Bristol’s Twitterati will be able to meet their online acquaintances, put faces to names and make new friends during an evening of entertainment and a prize-packed raffle draw of items generously donated by local businesses and organisations to aid the Concern Worldwide cause. Prizes include £200 worth of House of Fraser vouchers donated by MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, a PlayStation 3 donated by HyperlaunchDMG, a two week gym membership for two adults and two children donated by Cadbury House and a champagne and lobster dinner for two donated by Fishers Restaurant.

Bristol was the first city in the world to start selling Twestival tickets which can be purchased at http://www.amiando.com/Twestival2010_Bristol.html. The price includes all entertainment and the first 150 attendees will receive a goody bag. All proceeds go to Concern Worldwide.

Concern is a non-governmental, international, humanitarian organization dedicated to the reduction of suffering and working towards the ultimate elimination of poverty.

Its mission is to help people living in extreme poverty achieve major improvements in their lives - improvements they can sustain without ongoing support. Concern meets the needs of these people in a caring and personalized manner, respecting their human and cultural dignity. They are committed to reaching the most vulnerable, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

Concern’s work is informed by a vision for change and their education programs target the poorest people in the poorest countries in the world, with particular emphasis on reaching out-of-school children such as girls, orphans, street children, working children, children affected by conflict, children affected by HIV and AIDS, and children with disabilities. Concern’s education programs currently reach over 700,000 people in 25 countries across the regions of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.
