If the name I want is gone is it a good idea to choose instead xxx.gb.com? Would people find it easier to remember? I am basing this on earlier questions, where the advice was to choose a simple name.

Dont use either. Neither are real domain names.
They are sub domains of something.com
What happens when gb.com or uk.com gets sold !!!!
You are stuffed.

t6c - I believe CentralNic the company that handles registrations of uk.com and gb.com might beg to differ on:

Infact their techincal director who happens to be a good friend of mine would really disagree with you.
They are real domain names, from a recognised domain authority although they are not the UK's official domain name controller.
If the company were sold it doubtless would be sold as a going concern, you domains would remain safe as stated in their terms and conditions.

uk.com's are valid domains names, not sub domains!
uk.com is my preference for being memorable.. not seen many gb.com's in use!

I've had a *.uk.net domain for quite some time, with no problem other than they are not cheap.

Hi wilfredw
I would advise choosing a different name and getting a .co.uk
Perhaps use a hyphen between two words if it is there. .co.uk is best if your business is centred on the UK. If you operate internationally, choose another name and get a .com or .net

i know new domain names are appearing all the time. but ot my mind the mains ones are
.com
.co.uk
.net
.biz
perhaps .info
Are the rest really worth having?

They are not actually available just yet. However, you can pre-register. The exact time period during which you can do this varies depending on how strong your claim to the name is. For more info see:

Yes, uk.com domains are more expensive than .co.uk and .com but they work just the same as any other domain, and yes they are a real domain name!

We currently use a .uk.com and have no problems with it,
we get enough traffic for business

Dragging this up from the nearly dead.....
Although this may cause two arguments regarding the "keyword in domain" opinion but there is a domain name available;
www.xxxxx.gb.com
If I wanted this domain because it included the keyword I want, will positioning be affected by the .gb.com extension if my target market is primarily UK?

I believe it will be treated like a .com in terms of SE rankings, as its not a listed as a ccTLD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_top-level_domains)
