OpenOffice has the ability to generate PDFs from any document.

http://www.openoffice.org/

Alternatively you can install a print-to-pdf driver. But you'll get more flexibility and better quality output with OpenOffice.

I use this: http://www.primopdf.com/

It's quite good. It basically sets itself up to be selectable as a "printer", so you can "print" any document and have it produce a PDF.

I use this too. Brilliant wee bit of software. Once installed, in Word, you just click File > Print and print to the CutePDF printer. It then saves the PDF document where you choose.

If you've got office 2007, there's an add-in that lets you save a file as a PDF.

For other applications, I use PrimoPDF.

I use win2pdf. Same kind of technology as the others (a virtual printer)

I tried a couple of others, and they worked poorly with things like embedded image files. Win2pdf has handled everything I've thrown at it perfectly.
