...whose tax return is still stashed underneath a pile of invoices in the attic, screaming 'two weeks to go'? Perhaps if we band together we can fight off Adam Hart-Davies when he comes to get us.

I think the Tax man like the self assessments to be late, they make more money out of you that way

I met a business advisor who said it's best to hand in the tax return as near to the deadline as you can that way the IR do not look too thoroughly at it and accept it just to get through their pile of work. Otherwise you'll get a junior going through it with a fine comb picking at it.
Don't know what people make of it here. Hope there are not tax people lurking!!

I went to the tax office on Thursday to get mine done for me as it was my first. They were really helpful and didn't even look at my accounts, just took my word for it all. Really annoying in a way as I had completly re-written my sales ledger the night before so it was all clear! LOL

Annoying? Why, because you had to re-write 4 entries

I used to LOVE Adam Heart Davies - what a guy! (my local hero infact), but I am afraid to say that I still havn't done my tax return yet either.
I've started to do it online and according to their website I am 16% of the way through!!!
yikes, I spend far too much time posting on here and not enough on my ax return.

No Nigel, in 2004/2005 I ran Rowan24 a freelance recruitment agency so I have proper accounts and everything. The art stuff wont come around until next tax year and yes, it will be quite easy! LOL

mine has finally gone off (first tax return - proud moment), the even better news is that they will be owing ME some money - yipee :D
Actually come to think of it, that's only because I ran at a loss last year - bugger, bugger, bugger :x

Yessss!!!!!
Finished it :-) Here's the next big question - how to celebrate?

I celebrated last year by getting going on the next block of paper work,
its so weird to have Personal, Corp, PAYE & VAT all up to date.
Will remember the advice with regards to early filing. I believe my personal tax was in as soon as the web filing would accept it.

has anyone on here had their tax return investigated?
I will have a break down if it happens to me!, my paperwork is sooooo disorganised.
Is there a cut off point for investigation? Is it really really scary? :?

Yeah Claire, I had mine investigated last year  . The mighty tax man sent the letter in the middle of January last year. At first I thought he was thanking me for sending in the current year that was due but no such luck, it was the previous year tax bill. Apparently they have a whole year in which to open an investigation and it is quite common for them to do so at the very end of that time.
Yes it is quite scary, especially as my bookkeeping is a complete shambles. What make it even worse was that I was so security conscious that I had previously shredded all my bank stuff, not thinking that I would be investigated and then had to apply to the bank to get copies of everything.
Nightmare
