Which are the best directories to be listed in online?
The reason I ask, is because since I was listed in Dmoz I have noticed that google has started ranking my website higher for a lot more keywords.
So which directories are worth listing in?
Which are the best?

Is it really that hard? (http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Suffolk/Bury_St_Edmunds/Business_and_Economy/Computers_and_Internet/)

Nope :-) not hard... but often takes a veeeeeeryyyyy long time if the cat you're submitting to has either 'no editor' or a "less than dynamic one".

So is Dmoz the best?
Is it good to be listed there?

An entry in DMOZ guarantees and entry in Google Directory which means Google can't ignore you. It also means you'll be automatically listed on loads of sites that "rebadge" the information within DMOZ.
As you might have guessed we're in there....

Having such an entry also provides a level of online credibility as it means your site has been reviewed by one of DMOZ's human editors. This therefore counts as a high value link.

Directories are, in my opinion, the best way to build quality one-way links to your site.
The top 10 directories are IMO:
DMOZ - as discussed.
Yahoo (http://dir.yahoo.com/)
JoeAnt (http://www.joeant.com/)
GoGuides (http://www.goguides.org/)
MSN bCentral (http://sbd.bcentral.com/)
01 Web Directory (http://www.01webdirectory.com/)
Web Beacon (http://www.web-beacon.com/)
Site Snoop (http://www.sitesnoop.com/)
Linkopedia (http://www.linkopedia.com/)
BigAll (http://www.bigall.com/)
Some of these directories only accept paid submissions though, so you have to work out if it is a worthwhile investment.
Anyone who wants a spreadsheet containing over 250 online directories, who all accept free submittals, require no reciprocal links and offer links in a search engine friendly format can find a link here (http://www.matthewkerry.com/directories.html).

Good suggestions Matt :-) I'd also add Gimpsy.com to that although a 'paid for' directory, it's well regarded by engines.
I'd make absolutely sure that any site submitted to the Yahoo directory not only follows Yahoo's guidelines but also is fully functional (no dead links, missing images etc etc) as that's a sure way for Yahoo to reject the site but retain your £199 just for the fun of it!
There used to be a freebie 'back door' into Yahoo directory via submits to Yahoo.Ca but this was closed a while ago. :(

I agree Tin. In my opinion a listing on Yahoo directory isn't worth 200 notes, but maybe that's just because I'm tight!

I thought you could submit to Yahoo for free but it takes a while to go through? I did this last year and now I'm listed.
In fact, I just took a £300 order from a new customer about half an hour ago who said he found me through a Yahoo search. It's unusual for someone to be able to say exactly how they found me - I usually just get 'on the internet' and they can't remember more detail than that. But he was very specific 'yahoo'.
I also used yahoo as my home page but I must admit I go to google now to search. However, don't yahoo also provide to other search engines like Ask?

Yahoo Search and Yahoo Directory are two different things. Yahoo Search will crawl the Web and list Web sites that it thinks are relevant. The only way to appear in the Yahoo Directory is via a paid submittal and your site will appear in a particular category.
Hope that helps

The reason I ask, is because since I was listed in Dmoz...
I have a site in DMOZ that I didn't even submit, can I assume you got into DMOZ without submitting also? (seeing as you seem not to know about it)
