You must all be sick of the sight of me
I have found out that the company I work for has a dozen sites all 301 redirecting to the home site
These sites are not webmaster verified either
e.g.
valentinecard4u dot co dot uk points to FunkyP
fathersdaycards4u dot co dot uk points to FunkyP
My 2 questions are:
1 - Do we buy another 2 years on the domains
2 - Why does it say 'valentinecard4u dot co dot uk' when it's redirected to the FunkyP site????

ok had a look.
Looks like your sitting a framed site on that url
hence the url wont change.
Google wont cache it so dont worry.

that address is just a frame around this page: www . funkypigeon . com/Pages/Main.aspx?type=card&majcat=48
so i guess it's for making it easy for people to type in... more of a branding thing than seo?

Easy for people to type in? I don't understand what you mean, could you clarify a little more please?

I thought that if a 301 redirect was in place the address bar would show the FunkyP address, not the original valentinecards4u etc
Take a look at remind4u dot com and let me know what you think?
This shows FunkyP in the address bar and I want to know the difference
Thank you for your time it is appreciated

valentinecards4u dot COM

It's not a redirect it's running in a frame.
On a separate note have a look at your VIEWSTATE code - it is HUGE.
Your developers should be able to reduce that as it will have a negative effect on your page loading time.

See my reply above - valentinecards4u is running FunkyP in a frame.

remind4u dot com is a 301 redirect, which is like being on the first floor and then taking an elevator to the second floor. you end up seeing only the second floor.
valentinecards4u dot com is just a frame, which is like being on the first floor and looking through a glass ceiling to see the second floor. you're still actually on the first floor.

Thank you everyone.
The redirect was done via 123reg so it's not a proper 301 redirect like remind4u then?
Is it detrimental to have a dozen sites all doing this?

no major risk of penalties
only problem is if people are linking to valentinecards4u... the link juice will not be passed on to the internal pages. depending on how many people link to the outside frame... you could be losing a lot of link-based endorsement for your internal pages

I've never heard of VIEWSTATE just had a read on t'internet and it should be as small as possible, having said that our site loads quick as it is?
I'll ask why it's big thank you

OK so there's no disadvantage, but are there advantages?

not for seo. for branding maybe, as people remember a basic domain name and type it in easier than with a long webpage address

It's not to bad on the 'personalised.aspx' page but you valentines page is actually running this URL:
http://www.funkypigeon.com/Pages/Main.aspx
Have a look a the source code for the above!
It also means you have another canonical url.

Ah I think I know why - that URL you posted works for all the main pages, it's the way the site was constructed e.g. I just clicked it and it took me to Christmas cards, does this make any sense?
The site is being maintained and updated daily by 6 programmers, basically it was written off the back of the remind4u design and this is why it's designed like that
Last week there was a new implementation so that I could find the URLs to specific products
From http://www.funkypigeon.com/Pages/Personalise.aspx
to http://www.funkypigeon.com/Pages/Personalise.aspx?ProductId=2925
So now the site has gone from 300 pages to 3,000 in a matter of days. Google is indexing daily we have 1,040 indexed to date.
