I'm Curious to know people's opinion on this. Out of all the online marketing strategies out there how would you rank them in terms of ROI, Traffic figures, leads etc.

Let's get the ball rolling!!

Depends on how you define it.

For example, web page split-testing is the #1 for ROI, but it doesn't directly increase traffic.

I'd say copywriting would probably be #2. Again, it doesn't directly increase traffic.

(both of these things affect what you can pay for a visitor, so they indirectly affect traffic)

Also, when you're comparing SEO and PPC, how do take into consideration the different levels of skill required?

SEO may be the "holy grail", but let's face it, most SEOs don't know how to get onto p1 for the really competitive terms.

Steve,

When I say ROI I mean actually clients that pay you pounds for your products. I can't understand how you can get this 'without' traffic.

If you say SEO/PPC are at the top are these justified if you are paying thousands of pounds?

Do you think you can get it "without conversion"?

ROI, Traffic figures, leads etc.

This is going to be very subjective to each specific industry, and business. I work with a company that sells collectable figures (china) who get the vast majority of their business through PPC, and the business model works well for this - so his ROI is fantastic. For another it won't be.

If you are asking for your business, and looking for some specific advice you may need to just show us a little we can get our teeth into.

Bear in mind, that if your website is horrendous, hard to navigate, takes ages to load and makes people feel sick when they look at it - you're unlikely to get much ROI from any option. If you have a great looking, slick, feature filled site with great info and selling copy ... start there.

Measure and identify your basic statistics. Out of 100 visitors, how many buy from you - what is the value of the sale - what is the cost of the sale - after you deliver what is your profit - and is the cost of the sale, which has to come out of the profit worthwhile? Could you afford more per sale, do you need to pay less per sale ... it's all very bespoke to each business.

With this info you can decide if you are able to pay £1 per visitor, 10p per visitor or £10,000 per visitor. Knowing this will tell you what your options are. If you can afford 1p per visitor something like PPC is unlikely to be a good choice, as 3-5p is really the minimum for very uncompetitive terms, highly sought after terms ('mortgage' for example) go for as much as £30 per click.

If you want help identifying your key statistics let me know, otherwise give a little meat for us to chew on and we can give you some more exact, and reliable answers.

Thanks
Stuart

u want us to rank ALL the online marketing strategies out there?

i would put some SEO strategies at the top, and some SEO strategies at the bottom. it's not easy to put all SEO under the bracket of one strategy

if you're paying thousands of pounds to an seo consultant i would suggest this is not one of the top strategies :D

Id say a strategic and targeted email campaign can rank among the top yielding marketing techniques. Incredibly cheap and effective when used correctly and an excellent way of turning visitors into customers.

Inbound link building with a goal of organic ranking. Get in for the long term, invest in the strategy over time and reap the rewards for extended periods. I've not seen better ROI's from any other techniques consistently.
