As I'm sure most of you know I made my own business directory last year. I have been informed that the website has lots of potential, but as I am aware it is in a highly saturated market place. The peice of advice I keep being given is to give the directory SEO worth.
Can any SEO experts explain how I can go about doing this. If this is not right, please feel free to correct me.
Cheers,
Danny.

Not sure what they mean by 'SEO worth' other than having your site appear top or close to the top of the listings for selected phrases.

I thought that to, but I also thought it could mean having SEO benefits for the business that are listed within the directory. Is this possible?

Yep, many scripts use jumplinks for tracking outward traffic. This would reduce the value of the link. But that said, if someone is willing to pay a chunk of cash to go into a directory, SEO worth of the link should be the last thing on their mind. The only reason should be ranking and traffic.

A good directory will have solid taxonomy and will be structured correctly, (preferably in a series of pyramids) All links should be do follow, category names should be keyword based, urls ideally should include keywords.
Each category should have unique content as well as listings.
Just a few.

Oh, and I forgot to say (goes without saying really), make sure people don't use the same content they use elsewhere. rewrite their stuff it is fails copyscape, and explain to them why.

Finding a load of irrelevant listings (especially with spammy keywords) in top-level categories is an instant turn-off for me: it's inevitable that some people will abuse the privilege of being able to instantly add entries (or will not understand why their website 'deserves' to be on the homepage) so a bit of pruning is essential.
