View Full Version : Duplicate websites at different URLs

Hello all,

I have purchased a potentially good keyword URL name. I have a website already up-and-running. I am trying to find out what are the pros and cons of having this already established site also on the new URL as well...

Your thoughts are much appreciated...

Having duplicate content would not be good for SEO. Do a 301 redirect from the new domain you bought to your website.

One site probably the new one will not get indexed.

can you not change some of the content around to come under the 80% similar barrier which I believe is the figure google consider sites to be duplicates.?

I think having more than one url pointing at your site can confuse search engines, i think its more favorable to just have one, but i can't see 2 url's causing too much damage to your seo if any at all.

There can be perfectly valid and legal resons for having multiple domain names pointing to the same content so I wouldn't worry about it so long as you do the correct redirects, etc.

If you can afford it then you could just experiment with it yourself. Do a 301 redirect as sanjiv suggests, and measure the effect on ranking on that keyword. Build some links with the new domain. In any case, you won't be doing much harm by doing it.

Hire a writer to rewrite your existing content based on the keywords of your new domain. Stick the content on said domain. Get ranked. Sit back. Watch the money come rolling in.

Hope this post isnt deemed 'trivial' and an attemp to up my post count and later removed by mods...

Thanks guys, looks like 301 redirect or all new content are the ways to go!

If you do redirects, double check the destination page. This might be an excellent way to link with the right keywords to the right page.

301 redirect authority degrades over time, so be aware of that and get yourself some quality, semantically related backlinks if you know how to.

There is nothing wrong with having several domains pointing to your main (money) site, just make sure that they are hosted on seperate ip's.

With regards to people talking about "duplicate content", you won't be penalised for having it by search engines but you won't get benefited from having it on your site. Remember, quality content is good for search engines AND human visitors.

Good luck

Use a 301 re-direct or a conocial meta tag.
