I have submitted an XML sitemap for our site and noticed that only 111 pages of over 500 pages are actually being indexed. Anyone able to give me some high level pointers as to how I increase this ?

Thanks,

You need to get some deep links really - that is, links not pointing to the home page.

Of the 1,801 pages only 70 are to non-home pages.

Is you content unique or are you using the description supplied by the manufacturer? If so re-write the content to make sure it is unique.

Also as well you seem to have some sort of redirection going on. For instance, clicking on the link below:

http://www.4little1s.com/cgi-bin/ss000001.pl?PRODREF=323&NOLOGIN=1

Leads you to: http://www.4little1s.com/acatalog/Vtech_Sleepy_Bear_Digital_Baby_Monitor_.html#a323

Why are you doing that? Is that a 301 or 302 redirect you are using?

How long ago did you submit it? It can take the google bot a while.

Also, check your Robots.txt for restrictions, and ensure the pages have unique content.

Internal linking from one page to another

Ok thanks, I will give 'deep linking' a go and see if I can do something about the unique content side of things and internal linking. Don't know about the redirects, but I think its an 'Actinic' thing.
Thanks guys,

This isn't re-direction, its the Actinic cgi-links. This has been discussed a lot on the Actinic forum.

So this eCommerce system has two different URLs for the same page?

If it's not a 301 or 302 redirect then is it using meta refresh?

Yes and (I think) yes.
The menu links run through a perl script that is actually the 'Search' script. The result is the true URL.

Well here's one reason why Google isn't indexing your site properly 4little1s as it's not following the links from the homepage to the internal pages

Can you explain this more? what sort of links.

Thanks

Aaron

Any links! Even just the one to each individual page should make a difference

sorry I did not understand how you realised there was 1,801 pages only 70 are to non-home pages.

Internal linking, what's the best policy for seo, I mean you can add links in footer to other pages but you cant really ad links to all other pages? imagine the links in the footer!

A link back to the homepage on every page? what is the best method?
