View Full Version : Advertising with Everton FC

We had a meeting today with an advertising agency, who work on behalf of Everton FC.

They have offered us advertising space in the Corporate section, at reduced cost for the remainder of the season.

The suggested position for the adverts will be in the toilets (very apt) two ladies toilets and two gents toilets, at a cost of £600-00 for four.

In the ladies they will be sited above the washbasins, whereas in the gents they will be above the urinals.

Do you think we should go for it (be serious now) as a decision has to be made by Monday.

There are approximately 12 games left this season not including cup games. and Everton get approximately 30,000 a week coming into the staduim, lets say 1000 use the loo per game
thats 12,000 views of your poster!!!

I'd say go for it

It won't actually be advertising to the supporters themselves, but to businesses attending corporate events etc. Possibly even to other football club chairmen/managers etc.

Hi Pilfo

Do they know what kind of businesses will be coming to the events? And are they the kind of businesses you want to get your message in front of?

I've seen similar adverts in the toilets of motorway service stations. Cleverly there's a load of printed Post-It notes, so you can take one away to remember what the website address is.

Who's your target audience? Will they be attending Everton games?

Hi Pilf.
Ordinarily I would feel that my product is demeaned by advertising in a john. But where you can get some mileage is because you're a complementary industry to the toilet.

I daren't go into my imaginative slogans  , but I think you would do well out of it.
cheers, Nigel

Why would you want to advertise with Everton? Jeez at least pick a good team. Like Bolton!

For whom Wanderers is an apt name. :)

Are the fans Wonderers?

What's the typical profile of a purchaser of your product? Who influences the purchaser? Are those purchasers and influencers among the likely users of the toilets? Will they notice and remember your company's name after they leave?

How many visitors are likely to read your ads? Can Everton provide you with traffic estimates? How many business visitors attend a typical game? Can you obtain a rough estimate of the number of impressions?

How will you grab attention? Can you come up with a memorable line related to the location? "Enough of this crap. Now it's time for a real ball game." I'm sure Nigel could come up with something very witty.

How much profit do you make per item? Will you sell enough of them through this initiative to recoup £600, the cost of designing and printing posters, and other overhead costs?

Is there any value in installing a sample system in a gents' and a ladies' cubicle? If so, could the samples remain in place beyond the term of your advertising contract? Does your company name and logo clearly appear on the device? Do they come in Everton blue?

I'd say go for it - like you say it isn't just consumers but they host corporate events too. You never know who might need a loo!!

Huh? What do you think of me, Steve  ?

By the way, 'For your personal hygeine whether cold or hot, just sit on this and flush your ****.'

Am I getting close?
Cheers, Nigel

Everton actually contacted me (I support Liverpool!)

Apparently, Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC are the two most difficult clubs to get advertising space with.

As Everton are a community orientated club, they offer 50% of their advertising space to the larger national companies, and the other 50% to local businesses.

 I may try and barter with them, and rather than go for four posters, just have three; one in the ladies, one in the gents and one in a disabled toilet.

All for £300-00!! What say you?

What was the first price they gave you? And why do they need a decision by Monday?

Check it is a real offer, we once got conned by a man saying he was from our local rugby club, turned out he was a fake and just hired the club house to make us think the ruby club knew about it.

He contacted us too saying he was working for the club.

They told me that as we were half way through the season, there would be a third off the price, for all posters/advertising.

For an 8ft x 6ft poster in the corporate suite (at for instance, the top of the staircase) it would be £800-00. For half that size it would be half that price.

For the smaller posters that we are considering, they are £200-00 each, but if you purchase four or more then they would only be £150-00 each.

That would mean that for a full season they would normally be £600-00 each.

When I received the 'phone call on the Tuesday, they asked could we arrive at a decision at the meeting on the Thursday.

I told the guy that I met with, that I needed to mull over it, at least for a few days. They are to call me again on Monday.

I would somehow view where your posters will be to see who your 'viewers' will be and whether the poster is in fact in a disclosed area as some parts of Club are only open to certain people.

The toilets you mention may well just be for the intoxicated fans and the Executive members have access to an Executive Lounge.

Would advertising in airports be any cheaper with a much wider audience? Such as foyers, VIP lounge etc. Not sure who your product is aimed at, the domestic or commercial customer?

The thought had crossed my mind, and we may do just that sometime in the future when we have a bigger budget. However, Everton FC have offered us the advertising at a huge discount.

Our product is targeted at anyone (in fact everybody  ) that uses a toilet!

How about:- "Blue, Blue, Blue...Bidet-Loo!"

Maybe for the opposition though, you don't want to make the home team think you are calling them floaters

What about Bloo Bloo Bidet-Loo ?

I'm now beginning to wonder whether it's worth it, as there's only about three and a half months left to the end of the season.

Any opinions?

I'm not sure that undirected retail advertising is your best route for your product are you?

It's a bit of a long shot that lots of random football visitors will be looking for a go anywhere toilet.......

Off the top of my head I would think that your ad budget would be better spent in a more focused way. Say directly mail and calls to Loft Conversions companies and ads in DIY and lifestyle mags - maybe a stand at the Ideal Home exhibition.

It's always tempting to jump at what seems like an opportunity but if it was never in you marketing strategy to do it that way, it's probably not a great idea.
