I have not used it in years and it has looked to have changed quite a bit.

It used to be good for google, is that still the case or has spammers changed that?

We have used to promote a few artists and write a bit about us too as well as a brief snippets of our blog.

link is http://www.squidoo.com/newbeatsmedia if you want to lensroll it up and help each other :)

Interesting to hear what the pro SEO people think of it now

We have a squidoo page for our wall art (http://www.squidoo.com/fotoviva) and we get a few visitors come from it even though it hasn't been updated for a while. Not sure if the links are still worth anything, maybe someone can enlighten us?

i'm not familiar with squidoo, would you say it is beneficial for me to include this site in my social SEO? :|

If you have a spare hour it's worth it for a few links I guess.

I know it used to be very good, a couple of years ago, but I am guessing now it has been over run with spammers and those types, so the credibility for google may have gone down.

I think it is worth having a go though, If it is interesting and sell stuff in the right place you can make a bit of dosh but I think it is hard to do it though

Squidoo can still be pretty effective if you concentrate solely on targeting long tail keywords with less than 100k competing sites.

You will still have to market your lens though by creating backlinks through articles, RSS feeds and other web 2.0 properties for it to stay at the top of the SERPS.

For high competing keywords however, Squidoo can still be used as a cog in your overall backlinking strategy.

It sounds like a long slog as you have to do the same for the original site and then squidoo that is supporting the site.

Think I will have to do this one gradually!

Sadly there are no real short cuts, at least any that I'm aware of:)!

And while you may get top rankings for a long tail keyword Squidoo lens relatively quickly, to maintain that Top spot you will have to backlink.

It really does depend on what your strategy is though. For instance if you were marketing let's say a 'hot trend' product you might want to throw up a quick lens with your affiliate links (first mover advantage is key), make a few quick bucks and then move on, rinse and repeat...

Kind regards,
Darryl...

For me, Squidoo isn't on it's own any more. I like to include it in linkwheels, with a number of social bookmarking, social news, article sites, press releases, yahoo answers, and so on, together forming the hub/spokes.

If you don't have the time or inclination, there are a number of companies where you can outsource this at a reasonable price. I saw one the other day from an international, $45 for 20x web 2.0 properties, 20x 200 word articles, optimised based on your keywords. If you had 1 or more of these added each month with variations in target long/short tail, you'd appreciate the impact, I'm sure.

I do not offer this service, so don't ask - this isn't an advert.

I wouldn't outsource that type of thing I don't think not what we are about at all. What is written by us is written by us or our journalist's. That way we can keep the content the way we like it

Google apparently hit Squidoo pretty hard about 12-24 months ago. It's a haven for spammers and parasites.

Google used to be in love with Squidoo back in 1998 and it was very easy to get pages ranked. Spammers caught wind of this and started posting all sorts of stuff on there. Google reacted. Squidoo got penalised and lost a lot of rankings. Penalty has been removed, but I feel Squidoo is not as effective as it once was.

Thanks for the info, I guess getting lens of the day is a pretty big one

It was destroyed by spammers and given a Google slap. However, they changed certain things on the site and now it is back to being an authority website as views by google.

Worth the web 2.0 link but the no follow attribute it now employs means write a good seo'd post, then move on to your ezine, scribd doc etc.

Hope this helps.

Yup, I think Squidoo is another good social media site for an extra backlink! :)
