We have hosted exchange and have found that some emails consistently are not delivered to us. We have several different user accounts and find that emails from certain domains do not reach them (doesnt matter which one). Have checked with the hosted exchange people and they confirm the emails are not reaching them.

Any clues, im at a loss and its a real pain because we dont know which emails are not getting to us! I know of 3 different domains that are not getting to us and they have no link that I can see.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

What's upstream of your hosted exchange?

Does mail to your domain (I presume it's a domain) go via an ISP or hosting company? Or do the MX records point directly to your hosted exchange?

im not entirely sure. We originally had btconnect accounts before they were switched to the hosted exchange. I do remember i had to change something to do with the mx stuff (i know nothing about that really, just followed instructions!) through the bt website i think.

I had similar problem, not getting emails. Changed my hosting provider and now its all fine.

if it helps, this is what i had to do:

To use Active Mail your MX records will need to be changed on your DNS server to:

mail1.jellyfishnet.co.uk

10

mail2.jellyfishnet.co.uk

10

Both these records should be defined with a preference (or priority) of 10. This is to allow load balancing between the two servers.

to add to my last, in the dns record on the btconnect website, have the following setup:

MX @ mail1.jellyfishnet.co.uk 10
A www xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (have hidden the ip address)
A ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
A @ xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
MX @ mail2.jellyfishnet.co.uk 10

does that look right?

So jellyfishnet.co.uk are your hosted exchange providers?

Those MX records mean that mail from the internet will be delivered direct to their mailservers.

Is there any Spam/Virus filtering in place? Sometimes these are set to silently delete, and there is therefore the possibility of deleting a false positive.

im with active office, thats their server.

When i queried it with them ages ago (there was a specific email address that i was not receiving emails from) they said their logs showed no attempts to deliver emails from that address, the inference being it hasnt got to them and was lost before it got to them so before any spam filter has been applied.

Have now got it with a few emails addresses not just on my account, but on all of them.

Have emailed active office again, to check i have set it up properly. Are there any other records that should be in there? I did see somewhere that had A mail mail.etc..... Do i need something like that in there?

These are probably basic questions, but i have never needed to look at this stuff.

thanks

No, the MX records look fine, they should point to a hostname, which in turn will have an 'A' record. In your case jellyfishnet.co.uk would maintain the 'A' records which give the IP's of their servers, so your part is only to point to the hostname(s) as you do.

In the 3 domains not getting through, are you able to check that there was definitely no bounce or delivery failure message?

I have been getting the hosted exchange people to help with this as well. The problem was there were no bouncebacks- it just looks like we are ignoring people!

It was suggested i check the old mailbox (xxxx.xxx@btconnect.com) and there they are. What i dont understand is that old domain used to have aliases so emails sent to and from xx.xxx @companyname.co.uk were being handled by btconnect but never seen. Some of the missing emails have replied to the emails i have sent them and then been picked up by the old btconnect address.

Anyone know how this can be and what i should do to stop it happening?

Could you not just setup a forwarder at the btconnect mail box to forwared onto your companyname.co.uk.
