Thanks Dave - I've been looking for something like this. TAS Books looks to be just the job for now.

I thought that initially. Sacked it. Maybe fine if you are comfortable with accounting software but i found it more a hindrance than help.
Put my hand in my pocket and bought Solar Accounts. Well worth the few quid it costs.
Try it, you'll not regret it.

Phil,
I have to say, "FREE" usually means "MORE EXPENSIVE" in terms of business use. What you'll get for FREE will cost you more in the time it takes you to learn the software and wade through the bugs. This isn't the case for all software like that, but if it was me, I'd be looking at getting something that you know works, that comes with support and doesn't restrict you to the number of companies you can have on it.
Solar Accounts gets my vote :)

I would certainly recommend VT Cashbook, very versatile and easy to use

Hi PhilBen,
What kind of experience do you have with accounts? Like Stugster mentions above, you don't want to spend ages learning about a piece of software only to realise that it doesn't actually do what you want it to.
I would give a vote for VT Software if you need something for free but you may want to invest a small amount on bookkeeping software at a later date.
Alternatively you could look for a local bookkeeper with software.............. Just a thought ;)
Kind Regards
Neil

I think Sage's basic accounting package costs under £100. Not "free" but it's from pretty much the biggest name in the business. Does depend on how complex your business is of course, as the cheap version is pretty much as basic as it comes.
The benefit is that an upgrade to using a more complex version is easy enough if your business expands.

I would not recommend Sage to anyone unless they have a good knowledge of accounting. It is the most common package we see sitting unused in the corner of an office when we go to see a new client!
For £100 you would be better off with Solar Accounts.

I think it is better to buy one of the most popular softwares, available in the market or better check with your friends, who are in similar business. May be then can tell you a cheaper software meeting all your requirements.
Sage is good but little expensive. But it do payback.
Thanks

If you already have Excel; then it will not cost you any more to start using it for bookkeeping. As your accounting transactions get more complex it would be well investing in software: VT, Tas and Quickbooks are all options.

As Stugster says, 'free' can be counter-productive.
Excel can be ok, but there is more scope for user-error and a lot of accountants aren't fans of customer-designed spreadsheets for various reasons.
I highly recommend Solar Accounts. It's not free, but it's inexpensive (even more so - see my signature!) and really is excellent value for money. The customer support is more than excellent - something you just won't get with the bigger names.
