Hi Yousuf

Glad to see that you've seen the light and decided to hire an accountant. Too many times I've had clients come to me who've tried to do their own accounts, made a complete mess of it and then decided that they need an accountant.

The days when accountants were seen as a luxury are over. It's a lot cheaper for you to get one in from the beginning as the surest way to drive up your fees (and hack of an accountant) is to present him/her with a mess to sort out before they can even start doing your accounts.

If my pipes burst or if my car broke down I'd much rather pick up the yellow pages and find a plumber or mechanic than spend hours or days poring over technical manuals and then trying to fix it myself. I might gnash my teeth when writing the cheque for the invoice but I'd derive some comfort from knowing the problem had been properly dealt with.

Sorry if this sounds like a lecture but it's more aimed at those who think that doing it themselves will save them money. Chances are it won't. Anyway I'll stop ranting now

I've replied to your posting and wish you luck with your search.

Regards

Joy

Joy,

I completely agree with you on this and wish more people would go down this route. I would even go as far as to say I prefer the old paper bag full of receipts at year end than someone who has tried to do it themselves with little success.

Although saying that, ideally I like to get someone at the beginning of the year and do the whole thing properly (and usually cheaper) than any od the two above!

Couldn't agree more. I'd much rather look at a couple of Tesco's bags full of stuff and say "this is going to cost you £x" than have somebody come to me who's "done all their own bookkeeping", say this will cost you £x and then have to ring them up a couple of days later and say "remember I said this will cost you £x? Well I was wrong - it's actually going to cost you £y"

In the past my additional charges for correcting poor book keeping has been well documented on these forums.

I would agree that if you are not confident/knowledgeable enough or do not have the time/inclination to do it yourself then get professional advice from the outset (It will work out much cheaper in the long run and the advice that you will get along the way could be invaluable0

I would highly recommend you getting in touch with someone such as Joy for your accounting needs :D

Thanks everyone for all you help and advise during the last week or so.

I have another question....

Say i trade in January, maybe sell a number of items. Then I dont do any trading till April - will this complicate matters where book keeping is concerned.

What would I need to do each month in order to keep on top of things?

In terms of book keeping it will not complicate anything in fact it will just give you a couple of months off from doing the chore :D
