There is little doubt that there is increased awareness about the usage of white space as a design element. The best thing is to have a elegant layout and loads of white space pervading the layout.

I don't know about those guys, they only do half a job. Nice clear site though.

It's a fundamental building block of first class design.
Fine for a poet, but if you're in business, you don't case about "first class design", you care about sales.
If you're using paid advertising, there's a clear trade-off between white space and keeping down the cost of the ad. And a lot of white space usually doesn't pay for itself.
