Hi

I've created a very basic website using SiteMaker which came with my domain name/hosting package. But now I need to learn how to make my site appear in google searches rather than just rely on people typing the url. I've put keywords in the SiteMaker admin/manage your site section but not sure what people mean when talking about meta tags and indexes and optimisation - maybe they are options I don't have with my basic package. I'll soon have some flyers that will be going out locally so hoping to start spreading the word but need to know some of the clever stuff about how the website gets found. Am a complete beginner (as well as being a mum to a demanding toddler and having a full time job) so been looking through some of the threads but struggling to take it all in as am very tired!

Anyone got simple tips (in non technical language) - haven't really got money to spend yet so any tips on free tools or cheap options would be great, but also keen to understand what you get if you have the money to spend.

Thanks

I'm sorry to tell you but http://tododid.co.uk could be served as an example of how websites should NOT be done if you have search engine optimization in mind.

There is simply to much to tell you in one forum post, so I'd advise you to Google SEO, get some beginner handbook / tutorial and come back here with questions after you read it.

Its not a bad first time effort , but it depends if your running the site as a bit of fun ,or as a serious business?

If its just as a bit of fun then its great , but i notice you have set up a Ltd Company for it, so therefore i guess you are serious ..

Now in that case and you want to attract a bigger audience and give the Company a higher profile and expand into wholesaling etc then .paying a little money would be wise .

I dont get the product myself as i am past the looking after kids stage ,but i guess mums and carers could go for it.

seems expensive for a note pad to me ,but i am old and wiser ..

Now to get it listed

http://www.tododid.co.uk

Theres your first link ..

as the other suggested go to google and enter in there , join some mums forums and promote with the link there.

Good luck

Like to look at the good things first and the content is great (text and images of product) I even like the notepad look but thats where the good news ends, flash is used by default on this site builder (totally wasteful), the SEO is generally terrible, there are ads everywhere (would never buy anything from a site like this), code is not W3C compliant, assume the order form simply sends an email to you.
I think that this project should be instantly moved away from sitebuilder and given the website it deserves, lots of potential here as I see you have an eye for detail and some design flair perhaps.

Good luck

To be honest in terms of seo, tododid is number 1 on google which is no suprise anyway. But what keywords could you associate with her product? and what are the chances of it being highly searched every month not a lot really. For products like tododid its more advertising the sites on leaflets, papers,. seo is kind of irrelivant.

Yep you have a point there Massey, its a tough one ..need some clever work and stuff ..or an expensive ad campaign

Thanks for that - just took delivery of a load of postcard flyers that I created on vistaprint so beginning my local spread the word campaign through network of mums/families/baby groups etc and also have a bigger plan to eventually approach childminders and nurseries via mail/phone. I guess the flyers/postcards and any editorial space I get in newsletters etc will help me direct people to the site.
