All website owners should learn basic HTML. This formatting language is rediculously easy to learn, and very useful. In fact it is so ubiquitous that the world wide web as we know it would not exist without it. It should take you about 30 days at about 1 hour per day. So study it and save yourself loadsa time and money.

Most of my clients are professionals who don't have time even for that. They work stupid hours each day and use us mainly because of the hassle involved in doing it themselves. Besides, I even use our own CMS on my website so I don't have to put paragraphs in.

I agree with what you say, it's just not always practical, and most of the things they want to do as a website owner involves using CSS or JavaScript (in my experience with clients)

Hi Dave. Very true - to a point. The problem is that most sites are far advanced of 'basisc HTML' that it would require a 6 month full-time course to become abreast of the technology, then another 6 nonths later you're behind! I would certainly rather pay a 'pro' for a top current job, than flounder around myself to end up with a beginner's site.

Most site owners can't be bothered , thats why those of us who work within the industry accect that we are a servcice industry.

Busienss owners - learn how to clean and wash, you don't need to pay for cleaners to tidy yoru office. it wil save you loads 'a' money.

I think this explains my point :)

I tried to understand it and learn a bit, but I find when I find something boring, my memory will not kick in and the day after I tried to learn the first bit, i've forgotten it and have to start again....it will not stay in my brain for some reason and I get very confused with it all. I have decided to leave it to those who can do it, i'll only muck up if I do it myself :D

Stick at what you are good at, my new saying

When I start making real money from my internet businesses, then I will be able to pay for this stuff, totally headache free :D

My new years resolution is to learn something new. This could be it. I don't have much money to put into my magazine and therefore I can't afford to pay for someone to do the HTML for me. I usually have to ask for freebies and I hate doing it.

I'm interested in learning :D

Cheers

Mac, Nigel and Gary are quite correct. I should have aimed it at people like Chris, and perhaps change "save loadsa money" to "cut your costs".

Notice also that I say that website owners should learn "basic" html. Of course it would be counter productive (and very boring) to spend too much time in an attempt to become an html guru, but I think a short one or two day course would be very useful, rather like taking the time to type with ten fingers instead of two, or being able to change a wheel on your car.

I learned HTML only 2 months ago and designed my own site only because of my budget being so small, now i am changing the site to xhtml and sorting out the css and coming away from table layouts.
Its a learning curve but i enjoy it.

Try shorthand! It's great! I've only been doing it for a week and already I'm doing simple words!

In simple form, XHTML is just a more strict version of HTML. There's nothing more complicated about it. Just close tags, lowercase and that's generally it. DHTML is a completely different story and is FAR more complicated than CSS & XHTML.

So what is the diff then between asp. Asp.net and php?

That's a bit like saying:

"All car drivers - learn how the internal combustion engine works".

It's not complex - just look at the IQ of your average car mechanic and it'll say you a tonne of time and money if things go wrong!
