I have the PowerBook G4 500mhz titanium currently using 256MB RAM. As I don't heavily rely on the laptop for business, is it worth upgrading the RAM to 1GB?

I can get 1GB RAM for about £100. Upgrading the RAM will at least let me upgrade the OS from 9.1 to whichever.

Looking to keep costs low at least for another 6 months or so. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Hmm,

tricky one, my machine of similar spec is feeling very long in the tooth now, and although it will be passed down the line, it just doesnt cut it like it has for the last 4 -5 years!

I have promised myself a new 19" pb before my birthday.

So iguess my advice is this, if you just run email and bits on it you should be OK to upgrade memroy and get another year or two out of it.

Otherwise put the ton towards the next one, but plan to max the memory on that one from the start.

Hi Jonathan. Is there any reason why you would want to upgrade the OS? For example, up until about a year ago I was quite happy with Windows 2000. But then I needed to buy the Visual C++ development environment so I could write Windows programs with the latest libraries. The two versions were incompatible so I had to upgrade the OS to Windows XP to run VC++ 7.0. They were both MS products, so as you can imagine I felt somewhat ripped off.

I would say hang on to your dough unless you really need to upgrade.

The main reason why vendors release new versions of their software is similar to the reason why car manufacturers change the shape of their vehicles, that is, to increase a decellerating revenue stream.

Oh and my Windows 98 box is still very useful for lots of things. In fact I've been told by experts that 98 is actually a better OS than XP in many ways.

Thanks Crus...may well do that...just to get a bit of life out of it.

Dave, thanks also, but it is a MAC... I have MAC OS 9.1 at the moment which needs to be upgraded to a better one so I can use Firefox. Currently using IE5.1 which has been wiped off MS shelf

I have 2 DELL PC's as well, one running XP and other running ME. Will be increasing the RAM on the PC running ME and installing XP as well.

The MAC is just for me to do simple mobile jobs, mainly drafting in MS Word and Excel. I don't use email on here but access the Internet
