Bought and installed 2GB of RAM on my laptop today. Apparently laptop does not recognise it.
Have disconnected and reconnected the battery to no avail
Have prompted BIOS using F8 prior to Windows, cannot see relevant option.
I have installed memory chips on previous PC's and they were recognised on start up. Any advice on how to get this laptop to recognise the new chips?
Much appreciated

A lot of older laptops won;t regconise 2gb sticks. Also have you removed your old RAM in case its simply not comatable?

I have 2 x 1GB sticks as this is what the Crucial website scan recommended. They both have fitted in just fine. The old RAM, that is 2 x 512MB have been removed and replaced with the new sticks

I did the Crucial scan again with new chips in and its shows 1 x 1 GB and 1 empty slot, however both chips are in...

One may be faulty, try each 1GB until you find the faulty one and return it. I have gone for years without buying faulty RAM (I spend about £1k a year on RAM) and had to return one today as it would not boot with with it, tried on three different laptops though.
2 X 1 GB will work fine so I can only assume one is faulty.

How much RAM is your BIOS or Windowes reporting? Go to control panel and system properties :)

:) just try each one as a single pair and you will know which one to return.
The price of DRAM has gone up so I am guessing memory makers are sourcing cheaper chips and this is what is causing it. I had a spate about 3-4 years where 1/4 modules I bought were faulty.

Hoooorrrraaaayyyy
I used one 1GB stick at a time to test for faults, all fine. I then tested one slot at a time, all fine. I then put both in firmly and it now shows as 2GB. I think it was my fault for not making sure each stick 'clicks'!. duh!
Thanks very much everyone for your help, you're great!

It is amazing how obvious something is when you do it all the time. Actually I am pretty sure i've mad that mistake a couple of times :).
Hopefully you have noticed the speed difference already :) Everything should feel much smoother.

Yes, incredibly smoother, thanks. A good few more years to go...
