Depends on where they land form - referrals, organic searches, PPC, banners ads, marketing material. It also depends on what you hope to acheive from the tanding page.

Obviously from an advert you want to make a sale so the the landing page needs to reflect this goal.
A blog page however may be there to generate interast in a topic.
Some landing pages act as funnels to lead the visitor to a particular product or service.
Other landing pages could be for special offers, lead generators, email harvesting and so on.

So before you think about the creation and optimising of a landing page you need to work out what you want to acheive and where your visitors are going to come from.

Creating a quality landing page is an art form in its own right

It's best have a flick through SEOmoz to get some ideas from them: http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?vs=seomoz.org&p=landing+pages&site-search-go=SEARCH

Question... when you say "landing page" - is that considered a special page other than the "home" page, or just the home page of the site? I've read conflicting statements at times, so unsure.

The landing page is the that the visitor first sees. It could be the homepage but it could be any. Suppose they search and land on the product page, that's their landing page. If you do PPC then you will have different landing pages for each advert. I have one site where everybody lands on an inner page because they just about all arrive from searches.

What have minisites got to do with the question about landing pages? It's a completely different market.

A minisite is created for a specific niche and uses a different marketing techniques to a normal site whose traffic comes form a variety of sources each one landing the visitor on a different part of the site. That's waht the OP was asking about.
