I think if you have many websites, you could build links among all your sites. This would be especially useful if they are on different IPs. :)

I really wouldn't bother Ben.

Adding your links to all the free sites means you are doing the same as everybody else. You can end up on a page with hundreds of others that nobody visits or even worse lumped in with some dodgy sites that a have already been penalised by the search engines.

What you want to do is find some of the directory sites that rank well in your niche and pay for membership. This will improve your profile and may bring in some leads.

i didn't get your question you mean where you promote your site. For promotion go for free directory and social bookmaking site.

I would add to what fisicx said. Directories, yes, but there are a lot of worthless ones out there. Hundreds of thousands of them. Bother with a directory only if it's in your niche, well established over several years and reputed. (Oh, yes, there are a handful of others worth pursuing - like DMOZ, despite it's diminished importance)

You could also find blogs in your industy and comment in them. Contrary to advice out there, I wouldn't bother with finding just dofollow ones. Identify the quality ones and make a regular appearance.

Submit a few articles to article directories.

Drop a few links in the free bookmarking sites - stumbleupon, for example. Just a few links. Within your account link also to other sites in your industry, it helps build relevance.

Try the UGC sites such as Squidoo and Hubpages. One or two articles in each. And a few links to those articles (perhaps also from those bookmarking sites).

Use social networking if you can spend some time to read up on what works and what doesn't. 99% doesn't. SPAM certainly doesn't.

Provide quality information that generates links naturally. Give people a reason to link to you, mention you, quote you, point to you for "further information".

When there is lots of competition don't even bother because it takes an expert to get past those that are alreay ranking. But if it is for low compeition keywords there is nothing better than adding another page to your site and just gettting a few backlinks here and there. Remember, slow and steady does the trick.

Your response to my reply is irrelevant as I didn't say don't get links ;-)

I was banned for being too good at Adwords as far as I can see but i'm guessing this voucher is a welcome back one.

Also doing some PR and getting stories published on real news sites (not just the free press release sites) with links to your sites is another good way of building up your links.
