Hi just wondering if anyone who is knowledgeable in SEO can explain wordress mega generator to me i have began looking at competitors source codes to check their meta tags and keywords and i found this "<meta name="generator" content="WordPress 2.6.2" "
I guess it is lifting them from blogs, does this have a advantage over normal meta tags? is it hard to do
Any help would be appreciated

meta name=generator simply defines the script that generated the document. This one just means the page was generated by Wordpress 2.6.2

All it means is they are using workpress. Every wordpress blog has this meta in the same way that a joomla site has:
<meta name="Generator" content="Joomla!" />
It's nothing you need to worry about, it has no effect on ranking or anything else.

It's not a ranking factor, but I'm really interested if we were to put this tag into a non-blog platform, would it show up in the blog search :)

I doubt it. It the pings that tell google about the new posts. The meta is information only I doubt if google even reads the line. This blog post lists the ones google is interested in: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/12/answering-more-popular-picks-meta-tags.html

Who is knowledgeable in SEO ? !!!
Good question?
They cant even answer that themselves !!!
SEO experts risk ending up in the same club as the bankers .Paid a lot of money without producing results .
I know we have a few here but if somebody does a job in most trades its either done or its not done ,or its done badly.These boys can say what they want !!! and when you say I cant find it on google ,they just say "ah but nobody uses that search term" :eek:

Have I missed something here? The OP asked what a specific meta tag did, two people answer correctly and then you start ranting.....?
