hello, I'm new to the forum and finding it really helpful so far. I've always worked alone on my own businesses and found the main difficulty is not being able to bounce ideas off anyone, the forum seems a great place to get an opinion!

I wondered if anyone knew the situation regarding using photos in advertising? My main business is PR and product launch (products are usually publications or websites) but I'm starting to branch out a bit. A client has asked whether I can design an advert for them. This isn't a problem as far as the graphic design goes as I can do that but I need to include a photograph and can't find what I want (or like) on the online stock image sites . It seems silly to use an ad' agency for a job I can do myself. I thought of advertising on a photography forum to get the image i need (a stone farm house) but am concerned about copyright. If a photographer takes a photograph or their own house for example, and sells it to me for use in the clients ad' what kind of contract should I get to allow me copyright? Equally, if a photographer sells me a picture of a house that isn't his for example, how should i ensure that it's ok to use copyright-wise? If anyone has a clue about this kind of thing I would be really grateful for any advice.
Best Regards
Lou

Hi Bell,

not my specialist area but I would try a few more of the stock photo sites like gettyimages.com and istockphoto.com. If you are prepared to pay a little more these and many other sites offer 'pro' facilities. I have a nasty feeling that pursuing this yourself could be a false economy, I may be wrong.

I recommend www.istockphoto.com

You pay for the licence to use the imagery on (almost) anything you choose. :)
