anyone know how long the norm is for VAT registration for a limited co from start to finish?

It really does depend on the line of business that you are in. Certain areas are regarded by HMRC as high risk in terms of potential fraud and they carry out extra checks. Anything to do with computer hardware or mobile phones springs to mind, but there are quite a few more.

If that's the case, then 3 months or more is not unknown, and you'll get requests for all sorts of extra information.

Appllying on line seems to be quicker, not least because the system won't accept the form if you've missed something off.

I did this recently for a new venture, took almost 4 months from online application to certificate being issued.

Applied for a client just before christmas and was registered within 2 weeks, which given the Xmas break and snow etc was very impressive for them. I think they've got their act together if the application is properly completed and you aren't deemed risky. Contast that with a year or so ago when 2-3 months was fairly standard even when there were no problems - leading upto 6 months if they wanted more information/proof.
