• Install McAfee VirusScan (not the suite - just VirusScan) www.mcafee.com/uk
• Keep it up to date

• Install Zone Alarm www.zonelabs.com
• Keep it up to date

• Install AdAware www.lavasoft.de
• Keep it up to date

If you do the above, you'll likely never have to worry.

Spam of course is a matter of managing your email and how it gets distributed across the web. Keep the display of your email address to an absolute minimum :) The danger in using spam filters is that, potentially, you may miss that all-important email one day...

Spam and viruses are separate issues, and you will need software to deal with each. Antivirus software there is lots of, some free, some paid for, but all are useless unless they are regularly updated.

Spam can be dealt with by special programs, or some mail clients have spam tools built in. I use Thunderbird, and find its spam handling OK.

This site offers a list of possible software:-

If you think you are infected, there are a number of online tools available. Google to find Trend Micro Housecall or Stinger to name just a couple.

You should also consider whether you need a software firewall (depends on your computer/internet setup) and also give consideration to spyware removal tools, eg Adaware and/or Spybot.

Some ISP's are now offering spam and virus filtering of emails, does yours?

Microsoft Antispyware's a gooden too. And AVG. Both free and effective. Spyware - Search and Destoy is good too. I could've sworn there was a post not too long ago about anti-spyware...

Yes, you're probably more at risk from Viruses than hackers and spyware.

Viruses and hackers can be a showstopper - so you really should protect against all three. :)

Ah, but Tom that's not strictly true. Macs are just as vulnerable to viruses. But because of the low user base the Mac has, it's simply not worth the virus writers' time to write them for the platform. ;)

Ive tried a few antiviruses and spyware programes. Zone Alarm is the best it has antispyware that finds spyware after running other spyware programes and updates its software everyday sometimes twice a day.
