Hello folks.

I incorporated a company back in April '08 and as far as I can tell am in the middle of submitting my first year's accounts and completing my Self Assessment. Or rather my accountant is.

I'd like to see if there's another accountant out there that's more suited to my needs. My accountant hasn't slept with my girlfriend or run over my cat to my knowledge but he seems to be so very busy and even though I told him I really would like him to hold my hand and guide me through things for the first year, I have liased with him very little. I don't feel I can speak to him or even get my head around what he's telling me without him using phrases like "As previously mentioned.." that make me feel like I've not been paying attention. He's familiar with certain terms and phrases when I'm not. I could be wrong but it's given me the feeling that he's not used to working closely with a client and is more familiar with churning out stuff for large companies.

I'd especially like to find someone that can suggest effective ways of reducing tax liabilities. I have no idea where I'd heard it but I've always grown up with the saying "Your accountant should be your best friend" in my head.

Well, I'd like a new best friend, please.

Are you looking for somebody local to you? In which case where are you!?

Or are you happy to work remotely? I've a few IT clients, some using their own companies inthe normal way and others working through a different structure for tax purposes.

Very happy to deal with queries, either on the telephone or by email - we don't charge by the hour and include unlimited telphone or email queries.

Contact details in the llinks on the signature below. Give me a call if you'd like a chat. We're supposed to be all day tomorrow but the weather forecast tomorrow afternoon is horrible and we might run away early!

Based on an April 2008 incorporation, there's unlikely to be time to change accountants prior to submitting your first company returns, or the imminent self-assessment. In any case, tax mitigation is largely about planning rather than retrospective action. Having said that, I would be happy to discuss how you might take things forward hereon.

As you suggest, it's important that you fully understand what is going on, and how and why. If you would like to PM, I'd be happy to have a chat and discuss.

Hey, has your accountant seemed really busy all year round, or just recently? January is tax return season, where all the self employed clients who promised to get stuff to you really promptly after April 5 finally get around to doing it...so most small business accountants will be a little snowed this time of year.

I strongly recommend you take a look at an online bookkeeping package like FreeAgent (http://www.freeagentcentral.com). It'll not only make your bookkeeping a doddle, but it'll assist with your invoicing, chasing debts, and make your accountant's life much easier. If you like the look of it, let me know as I can get you a discount on the cost.
