What has that post got to do with answering the OPs question :|
Most open source software have SEO modules that improve their page naming conventions and other on-site optimisation but its all irrelevant unless the contents you add to the shop is optimised as well.
Might be worth asking this question again on the SEO thread to ensure a sensible answer

its possible to get osCommerce ranking very well in the search engines, but only after a fair few modifications (happy to supply these ;-) )
"out of the box" Magento is by far the better package in terms of SEO as it has those features as standard.
That's not to say there isn't room for improvement in Magento, there is, but comparing a standard osC to a standard Magento then Magento wins hands down.

The answer to your question is ..... "blue"
In other words, it's the wrong question ;)
OSC/Magento/CubeCart/etc are just *tools* for building your ecommerce website.
Now if you're asking "out of the box, which provides better possibilties for SEO" then I'd say Megento, however as OSC is a very mature product, you'll find there are a lot of pluginmodules which do an equally good job at assisting your SEO efforts
So the real question, is which are you happier building your online-store in ? :D

Couldn't agree more, the differences between most Ecommerce solutions is paper thin at times. You should approach this from an angle of which software are you more comfortable using.

Some of standard magento is seo friendly "out of the box"
Also A skeleton seo theme has been produced for magento - google it and you will find it.
The theme is here
http://www.magentocommerce.com/extension/974/yoast-blank-seo-theme
And the site for information is
http://www.yoast.com
The purpose of finding thisinformation , is the guy who produced it, documented the key issues, on what was right, and what clearly needs tweaking in the standard magento - all is not as it should be: from that you can make up your own mind.
You can also tweak other offerings eg the magicseo plugins for zencart etc, and it is useful to find the documentation for those plugins, because they too describe a number of key things needed to make other carts seo friendly.
But I said elsewhere - google is paying more attention to site loading times, and magento is slow in comparison to others.

I may be confusing it with some other application but doesn't magnento have the most appalling checkout process?
My point being that youy might end up ranking well but conversion rate is lousy.

I've been playing with the Magento demo recently and the checkout seemed ok - single page with 'rolled-up' sections - fairly standard stuff.

I've been working with Magento almost since it first came out and most of my work was SEO and I can tell you this: Out of the box, Magento is NOT even close to being something I'd dream of calling SEO friendly.
However, with several modifications, it can come pretty close to being on-site search engine optimized.
Keep in mind that SEO is actually a process, not something you can just "make".

May be some other app then. I just recall a long drawn out process over 4 or 5 pages. But if it is as you say all on one page then that's a bonus.

That sounds like Actinic - quite an outdated checkout, now (soon to be upgraded).

yeah the magento checkout is OK
there are actually two bundled as standard
then there are other options in the extensions, so you are really spoilt for choice :)

I have another site, a couple of different scripts, magento and interspire, I did try some asp.net and the best to rank was the .net but was the less user friendly in terms of managing orders, customers and just daily activities. interespire has come to be a great tool for managing orders if it wasn't for a few things they lack on shipping options, great SEO results and a lot of out of the box tools. I love magento because of the many stores integration but what I have seen in terms of ranking is actually very poor results. I know that many modifications may be necessary to achieve a search engine friendly site but all we did, and we did a lot, has increased ranking very little. I was asking all this because I see that many people use Magento but if is not a ppc push, a search engine will almost ignore a Magento site to the point of making you think you have been banned. I really appreciate all feedback and advice, cheers!

Is this true? I'm just installing Magento to have a play etc, but if it's going to screw my rankings then I won't bother wasting my time!

I haven't found that to be the case. The way the software is coded alone isn't going to 'ban' you from google. If that were the case, it wouldn't be as popular as it is....

The choice of e-commerce solution has nothing to do with your rankings. We're talking about on-site optimization here, give me any e-commerce solution and a good programmer and I'll make it on-site SEO perfect (if you have a budget for it).
Off-site optimization is much more important part when it comes to rankings and without it you're not going to rank anywhere even with the best on-site optimized website in the world.

not true, I can vouch for this not being the case with an essentially standard Magento

I agree on that. but once u spend a few hours on optimizing u might get really good result.
The same with performance. Many people complains. have a look @ magento store http://www.nitrotek.pl . It is very fast.
Google ranks: 1 st page for most of the rc model phrases in Poland. (such rc toys, rc models, remote controlled, rc helicopters, models etc.)
By the way. what do u think of design ?
