Hi There,
Just wanted to find out how many of you own a pirate dvd and wether or not you agree with buying them.
I personally feel strongly against pirated dvd's and think its wrong to steal a movie.
What do you think?
Regards,
Callum.

I agree, but I am guilty of downloading TV programmes from the net. After all they were free to view in the first place.

If I buy something, I'm certainly not buying a fake version of it, however good it is.
If I found out my Tag watch was fake, I'd be absolutely gutted!

Yeah, but so does a £1 watch. Just like a Porsche takes you from A - B, as does a Fiat. You don't buy it for it's initial purpose.

I dont buy pirate films - I personnaly would only ever be interested (in theory) in cinema releases not currently available legitimately on DVD but then I have spent too many thousands on a home cinema setup to get poor copies (whilst they may have great pictures I am yet to see any encoded in DD or DTS etc - yes I do appear to be frequently offered them but dont accept)

Examples.....
A lawyer with a Jag buys it on HP, in debt up to his eye balls, charges you a fortune to pay for his Jag and debts.
Another Lawyer equally as good as the first, drives a fiat, but owns his car and is not in debt, only charges half the price of the first.
As a business person watching costs and value for money, which would you pick :D
The clever one is the fiat driver to me, for being careful with money.

Yep, plus VAT too. Guess it depends where you are.
Tom has no car. Only ever met 1 client in person (I said I'd see them, no one has ever actually asked), live right near to anything I want, all shopping online, right next to train station and I'm a vegetarian/green swine, so wouldn't buy one anyway. Trains allow me to work on the move, plus I've actually managed to pick up business by meeting people on them anyway.
I'll undoubtedly have people tell me I need one, but I'd have one if I did

Pirated dvds just bug,
but I guess its who you are, sat throug one and all I could see was really bad washed out colours which prevented a crap film being watchable. The persons who it was (bob from some pub somewhere) was like this is a real dvd, I was like no way (too much Little B). Then at the end someone stood up, I believe this is now done to give the 'authentic fake' feel and my point was confirmed.
A quick headcount puts my dvd collection in the mid 4 figures, ouch, must remeber to list them for insurance purposes.
The problem is lack of social responsibility.
Big biusiness screws the consumer, when all they need to do is make cds/dvds normally priced and the demand for poor fakes will disappear.
Huge number of 'respectable' people, not just chavs buy pirated dvds as their morals have decayed without them even knowing it, whilst saying 'everyone else does so why shouldn't I'.
Next thing I know someone will be cloning my sites/businesses and selling them on, no wait thats already happened!
I despair, I really do!

Oh yeah,
to start a car war,
Jags do have a bit of a bad image, but I dare you to floor a V12 xjs (the one in speed) and not grin!
Porsches are OVER rated, good, but Carrera just about had that blurring speed rush as the second turbo kicked in, 350z (450 soon) gives similar driver pleasure without people wanting to spit on you, whats it clarkson says, 'dicks drive porsches?'. Sorry Tom.
Me, if I had the cash, a fezzer or two would be on my list along with some other desirables... If you want curb appeal you can't beat it, the build quality has been know to be iffy, and the power is delivered a little too gracefully for some, but I still watch in amazement as pissed scum will gladly urinate on your Mercs, ignore your BMWs cos they all just look the same, yet beat each other up to show respect whilst walking past the Cavallino encrusted beauty.
I can't complain though I regularly get to take a friends 360 F1 spider out and its the dogs over anything else I have driven. I'd buy a 430 in a heartbeat if the numbers came up then hunt down a couple of others as time passed by.

Tom,
your lucky to have access to a good train service, round here its expensive, unpleasent and late.
So many times I have wanted to take the train to London, but for the same price, I can hammer it down the M4, pull into West Hounslow, park all day for £2 quid, get a day pass on the tube and pay myself at least £1 for every minute of the 45 minute journey there and back.
The UK's infrastructure is key to economic success and at least a part of the rail network is laughable.

On a serious note, pirated software, DVDs, and CDs cost corporations billions of pounds every year. I've been to many countries where pirated software is sold openly on the street. I've even had people ask me to buy copies for them (which I won't do).
This is a huge problem in China. The country has to learn that it must abide by standard rules of doing business before it will be taken seriously. Companies there flagrantly copy and resell software from the likes of Cisco.
For small business owners who sell something that could be pirated, what would people recommend?

Nope, I mostly order online, The international shipping is very expensive unless the order is quite large, so I normally buy 10 - 15 at a time

Well my wife and i have a principle, if we go to the cinema and like what we see. We then tend to buy it.
I have never counted the contents of our collection to comment on numbers. I think we have quite a few though. Not sure if it is as vast as 250 lol

I generally work to that concept too, although some I just buy out of reviews, like The Woodsman. Never rent films. IMDB is my guide.

i agree, we never rent.
My wife and i are avid cinema goers, we see so many of the late releases there is often little that comes out that we have not seen.
Sad i know.
The truth then is that if we like what we see, we buy rather than rent.
We also frequent the Video shops a lot and buy from there.
We used to be terrible buying three or four a week will it got out of hand with no storage space.
I will say though
Are we there yet, very good kiddies film
Wedding crasher. hilarious
Prince and Me, quite good.
Harry potter and the goblet of fire, very good
Made in Heaven, very good
King Kong, out to see that next, its over 3 hours long though
Coming soon
Casenova seems quite amusing.
memoirs of the Geisha, i think is a must see.
And yes we do own the above mentioned that are released , and will likely buy those wen released.
and why pirate anyway, the quality id never all that good. Into the bargain, films are not expensive to buy. what are they now £14-15 quid? and the chances are u are not going to buy it unless u have seen it first now are you. This i guess is where renting comes in :-)

The price of the originals is not always a big factor. Many pirate films are bought before the real movie is released (i.e. it's still in the cinema).
Many people like the idea of a "bargain" so they will always buy pirate movies if they are cheaper than the real thing. The internet has made downloading movies easy and free - free is always cheaper.
However somebody has to pay for the outlay. If it's not by going to the cinema or buying the DVD then the only other option I guess is to embed ads within the movie.

It's worth pointing out to people who invest in DVD's that the lifespan of these lumps of plastic is limited.
In my experience , the degradation over time means that a small % will start to fail within 3 years, a very annoying chunk within 5 years and I can only anticipate a 50%+ by 10years.
For this reason, I personally have no moral objection to people who have spent the money to make backups of their investment.

The Woodsman is a very good movie indeed - shame hardly anyone has seen it really.
I don't ever buy pirated DVDs but I have copied all my DVDs onto a hard drive so that I can watch them on my iPod or have them on in the background sometimes whilst Im working.
A lot of the movies I buy now are purchased online through iTunes.

Here is a question on copying TV programs.
I tend to download TV programs not available here - For instance the American version of the Apprentice and the Office. As they are not on TV here and not available on DVD here am I actually breaking copyright as it hasnt be copyrighted here in the UK.
By the way I would buy them on DVD if they were available on DVD.
