View Full Version : Driving lessons as a business expense

I'm toying with the idea of learning to drive and wondering if I can claim it as a business expense?

Visting clients and lugging around equipment isn't easy on public transport!

PS...I'm a sole trader.

I doubt this could be classed as wholly and exclusively for business purposes!

So I would say no - others will disagree and should give there reasons which you will need to keep to hand in case of query by HMRC

No disagreement here. Can't see how you'd convince HMRC that you'd never use your newly found driving skills to do the weekly shop.

Much as I'm the champion of claiming every possible penny, I cannot see how you can get this one past.

Only thing I can think of is get someone to sell you a van with driving lessons thrown in and not itemise the bill. But that is stretching credibility.

While we are on the subject :) Is there anything we could do for our apprentice regards paying for driving lessons for him as an expense/training cost???

The main reason I'm thinking about learning to drive is to make things easier for my consultancy work but I'll take your advice on this one. At least I can claim so expenses when it comes to running the car itself.

Thanks for the advice.
