Noticed this a little while ago, when you type in a search term with location for web designers like 'website design essex' (or other geographiic location) you no longer get the google map listing, this also happens for SEO businesses

for some reason you can type 'in essex' or other location and it works though !

This happens all the time, search terms that bring up local listings can
change from day to day sometimes.
Add an "in" and it will probably come back up

oops, just saw you already mentioned the "in"

Agree things change from time to time but this change for Google Local Search results in SERPS is unique, specific and new and has only happened once ever (as far as im aware) It only affects website design and SEO companies.

The article confirms what I noticed weeks ago but as for Google's reason for this I can only assume that SEO and Webdesign companies were abusing the system and manipulating results (mapspam)

I found this myself some time back: http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=132017

My results still do not show even after this time.

This is the latest: http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2010/01/04/google-ditches-local-listings-for-seos-and-designers

And it seems to be the case as when I include the "in" as described in the above article my old listing appears along with the competition.

Abusing the system to promote their own companies! I've never heard of such a thing.

Works fine for my town e.g. webdesign in (town name)

I have tried 5 other town names nearby and they all show the google map listings at the top. It might be only certain areas they are blocking?

using 'in' might be why.

The point of the article I referenced is that using the "in" will show the results so "seo in location" works where as "seo location" does not.

So how does the result work for you Faevilangel when you remove the "in" from the search?

Not sure what others are experiencing would be good to know.

I misread the op, oops....

I have tried a couple of different ones without 'in' and it does seem to have been removed.

No results for 'Web Design Leeds' but when you add the 'in' the maps show again! This definitely looks to have changed since I last looked.
