New (First) iMac has arrived... couple questions please...

Hi everyone,

Well, my first Mac has finally arrived and I have a quickie that I hope you can help me with:

1. Can I use an ordinary (non-mac/apple) mouse? I have a spare one here and I'm not used to working on a laptop without one, but thought I should check first.

2. I immediately realised that I could not copy + paste with my usual shortcut keys or right-click so wondered if there was anywhere that you knew of where there are some quick-start tips for moving from PC to Mac.

Only been on it an hour so still finding my feet... and I go away tomorrow for 2 weeks so I'll have to wait to get fully acquanted with it...

- Feels bit odd but enjoying the new experience so far.

Congratulations to your x-mas present :D

You can use any USB or bluetooth mouse with your Macbook. However, once you get used to the touch pad (in particular the gestures with multiple fingers for zoom, rotation, X/Y scrolling etc pp), you don't want to use a mouse any more ;)

The copy/paste shortcuts (usually CTRL-C/V) will work if you use the CMD key instead of CTRL. So it would be CMD-C/V then.

A right-click isn't possible, because the pad has only got one button. Hold the CTRL key down while clicking... and there you go. You can also assign other shortcuts using Apple Menu -> System Preferences. For example I use a two finger tap on the pad as right-click.

Oh, and Merry Christmas to you, too :D

Well done! if you go into your keyboard and mouse set up you can change the mac mouse to do a normal left and right click.
Just because it doesn't have any buttons doesn't mean you have to use the keyboard shortcuts.

Assuming its a new MacBook you can set the bottom right part of the pad to be right click.

The title of the thread suggests it is an iMac, however the reference to wanting to use a mouse with a laptop and the trackpad talk suggest otherwise.
If it is an iMac then there is no need to recycle an old mouse as it will have come with a mighty mouse or a magic mouse, both of which have a right click.

No - not with the Mac but because I had to go away to Cuba the day after I received it and I have only just returned...

- but the few hours I had with it seemed great.

Starting tomorrow I can start uploading my d/weaver, email, msn and other files that I need.

Any tips or advice etc more than welcome to this Mac virgin ...

Hi,

I use a Mac for all of my work Photography & Design work, Plenty of good mac forums online to help you with any change over issues also the Apple site has some excellent tutorials.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to pm me & I will try to help.

Quick tip to keep on top of you mac ie: speed, download oynx its a great app. I often have a clean up and use it, depending on what your using it for I would also highly recommend a Lacie portable hard drive & backing up your macbook its fast & saves a lot of problems should you delete files or need to replace your hard drive.

If you use MSN, install Adium. If you want graphics editing, but don't have £400 for PS, download GIMP or Pixelmator. If you want video conversion, download iSquint. If you want decent office programs without paying for M$ Office, get NeoOffice. Get AppDelete, because you never know when a proper uninstaller will come in handy. Install Firefox, because it's a very good browser.
