My PC has recently been infected with some form of adware and I have tried a couple of the free downloads that say I am infected with loads of adware/spyware etc.
does anyone know any really good and safe progs for getting rid of this stuff.
P.S. I've just started using firefox after getting infected in IE!

Have a look here:

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware seems to be the best "free" product.

Free version of Ad-aware by Lavasoft. I use it and it's great.

As mentioned, use Spybot, Adaware and also Microsoft's Antispyware - all free, all excellent and all catch different nasties. It's safe to use all three; unlike antivirus software where you must only use one.
Also get crap cleaner and use that after the others - it cleans everything up a treat but unless you know what you're doing only use it in default mode. It's also worth unticking the cookies box unless you want to remove all your passwords to sites like this one ;-)

I cant rate adaware highly enough, gets rid of most things, if you get really stuck and the above mentioned anti spyware programs dont help, grab a copy of hijack this (http://www.download.com/3001-8022_4-10379544.html) and post your log file
