I wouldn't worry about pagerank. Concentrate on getting good quality links

Google applies Pagerank to pages, not sites.
The sites you mentioned are all well established, offer their visitors the type of content they want, and are trusted sources of information. Using all those factors (and 100's more) Google will typically assign higher than average PR values to certain pages on those sites that it deems as relevant.
Don't get too worried about "PR" - make your site useful for your visitors!

So basically the more content and more updated and the more people that use the site the higher the pagerank, the more google likes the site

It's the quality that counts mainly, though regular updates can encourage repeat visitors if they like what you do. My advice is to only add new content if it adds value for your visitors.

Pagerank means nothing these days so i wouldn't worry to much about it. It in no way determines a websites success and is just a small reflection of the amount and quality of sites linking in, plus the pagerank we see and what Google sees is totally different.

Not really. Page PR is just a function of the PR of the links that point to a page, and not really something that closely correlates with rankings.

PageRank is an indication of how well linked to a page is.
PageRank is a factor in organic SERPs, in fact it was the original Google SERP ranking system, and was heralded as the democratic search.
Sites like BBC, have a huge number of pages, and most will link to the homepage of BBC and as such that will tend to get a higher pagerank. And, of course the BBC is a known entity, so people will also link to the BBC pages pushing up the PageRank.
PageRank appears to be logarithmic so going from 1 to 2 is perhaps 6 times easier than going from 2 to 3, or if you like the page rank is really 1 6 36 ...
Each page on the web is worth 1 in page rank, though it could start at 0, and has to evolve to 1 through iteration of indexes. So, if you have a site with 100 pages you can contribute a maximum of 100 in PageRank over the web, if you do equal linking in a 100 page site, then eventually they should all show 1 as the pagerank.
