View Full Version : Goals for the New Year

So 2005 is about to go bye bye, what do you want to achieve next year?

It is a hard question to answer unless you are a goal oriented person and understand the principal behind it. I set goals and they do work, every morning I write them out and take action to achieve them. If you don’t know where you are going it is easy to get distracted and go off course.

Next Year MK Printing will be the largest flyer and poster supplier to pubs and clubs in the NW region and also the main supplier of materials to new and small businesses. This is of course no easy feat but I have an action plan that I am sticking to and so far I have been able to stick to it.

When people talk about goal setting one main one discussed is how much money you want to earn, I sat down and did my sums about this one. According to my figures and predictions, I want to be netting £2500 per week in the next 6 months, basically £500 per day on a 5 day week. I think that is quite a reasonable salary (£130,000) to be aiming for, I want to be on this by age 25.

If you are going to set goals, set big ones. No one got anywhere by thinking small. I suggest people read “Think and Grow Rich” and also “100 unbreakable laws of business”.

Before I started to understand goal setting and marketing my website was http://www.mkbusinessservices.co.uk/ I now run www.mkprinting.co.uk see the difference?

If you believe in your company then you really have to apply yourself and work harder than anyone else to achieve your goals. I have a 5 year plan that is broken down into a month by month action plan. You can’t go from running a small business to a massive empire overnight, it is done in small blocks. You first have to identify the end goal and then break it down into these small smaller steps and make sure you achieve them. You have to stay focused and saying no to opportunities will keep you on track to the goals you have set.

If anyone wants to ever discuss marketing or goal setting then please call me on 0161 248 5474. I am available 10am – 10pm 7 days a week, however I may not always be able to answer. I will do my best to get back to you if you leave a message. Regardless of what business you are in or what stage you are at, without goals you have nothing to aim for. The sooner you get into a growth mindset you will find success is like a drug and you will want more and more.

Remember it is very rarely the outside influences that causes a business to fail, it is the inner workings that is typically the reason for downfall.

My goals are just to be happy and healthy.

I've had some crappy bits, the last two years. I love business, but you work to live, not live to work. Things have happened to us, to make us see this :D

So from now on, for 2006. If it doesn't make me happy, i'm chucking it out the window

The new year is a great time to start new things. You feel re-energised and have a renewed vigor to do new things. As a businessman, one of the things that I will prioritise is to review my communication plan, determine the parts that are effective as well as the parts that fell flat and then try to devise a new plan that will better address the needs of my business.

Implementing a new communication plan at the start of the year is, for me, a good time for these types of strategies because you can make a month-by-month activity list and you feel that you are doing something fresh and new. And we all know that positive psychological triggers like these help a lot.

The New Year will see my brand new studio in action, no longer will I need to travel as it's at home so looking forward to a more flexible and fruitful year.

Like Jayne Happiness and Health are top of my list.

That is the difference! One thing in marketing is to create 'mystique.'

Matt has excelled!

Well I have only been in buisness for less than 6 months, I have a few regular clients now. My main aim for 2006 is to get my name out there and get more regular clients. The idea of setting goals per day/week/month is an excellent idea, my main difficulties, silly as this may sound, is knowing what goals to set! I am totally new when it comes to running a business, mine was not planned but I am doing better than I thought I would be in such a short time, initially, I said to myself as long as I can pay the bills each month, then that will do for at least a year, the first couple of months I didnt even earn that much, but now having a some regular clients that has improved immensly. In December, I actually made a fair bit more than I earnt in a month whilst in my last job which for me is very rewarding. Most of that is going to be spent on marketing (ok, I got xmas pressies out of it as well....) so I'll still only have enough left to pay the bills....

Hi confused. If you don't mind me asking, what is your business? Also, what is your name? It doesn't seem nice calling you "confused"!!

I think goals (and an action plan to achieve them) are important, but would disagree with Matt when he says "work harder than anyone else to achieve your goals".

The main benefit of having goals is that you've got something to focus on.

This focus means you can actually cut your workload by reducing the time you might squander on irrelevant and ineffective activities.

As the say, the shortest route between 2 points is a straight line. If you know where you want to be 5 years from now, you can head there directly rather than wasting time going down dead-ends or along the wrong road.

If you're working more effectively than your competition (which, for me, is about having a great value product/service, a clear, well thought out, goal for your business, an effective marketing strategy and the ability to get the most from your time), you don't have to work harder - you'll get far more done with the same time and effort.

When I say work harder than anyone else I don't mean on things that waste time or that are in-effective. Those who work the hardest in the correct direction make the more ground. This is what i was trying to get across.

Agreed 100%.

Or to put it another way, imagine someone takes 3 steps forward and one step back, that's 4 steps taken and only 2 steps progress.

Imagine someone else who takes 3 steps forward and no steps back, that's 3 steps taken and 3 steps progress i.e. 50% further with only 75% of the effort.

That's one of the benefits of having a very clearly defined idea about where you're headed.

I totally agree, goal setting is probably the most important thing in business. I have run a few businesses and I have never done goal setting before, recently I have got really into it and my life has transformed.

Steve, you seem like a great person and I would love to chat to you sometime. Please drop me a PM or an e-mail at info@mkprinting.co.uk and we can arrange to have a chat. I believe that sharing and teaching is the best way to learn.

Precisely, Steve.

One thing I learnt many years ago: Work smarter, not harder!

I want to get a few big contracts to clear the bills and then concentrate on getting my sales team up and running, so I can eventually get a studio and go full time
