Hi
I am in the process of launching a new ltd company - i am voluntarily vat registered
As part of my set up of the business and kitting out of my new premises, i've purchased some bits and bobs from B&Q
Now, i'll be submitting the receipts against teh business as a cost but I also want to reclaim the vat
however, the B&Q recepts don't break it out as net cost, VAT amount and total
B&Q are vat registered and their VAT registration number is on the receipt
can i reclaim vat on these items even though the vat is not stated separately on the receipt?

As you state that as long as there is a VAT number on the receipts, you should be able to claim the VAT even though the amounts are not separated.

I'd claim the VAT on such receipts, but be prepared for the possibility that a VAT inspector could take you to task on it. Going forward, get into the habit of asking for VAT receipts all the time.

These are known as less detailed vat invoices usually issued by retailers. Claim the VAT back on the qualifying items and you should be okay.

Hi everyone, thanks for the advice. Of course, I'll be running it by my accountant when i submit them all, but he charges a fortune if I phone him late and night with such trivia!!!
the most annoying thing about it now is that i have to reconfigure my expenses spreadsheet to calculate the net amount and VAT from the total - and there was me thinking i'd been clever setting it up the other way around!!!
ach well, it's a small price to pay for getting some money back I guess.
Thank you all again - in future - VAT RECEIPT PLEASE!!!!! I will learn!!

I believe that you can because their VAT number is stated. However you can check with the www.HMRC.gov.uk website - assuming that you don't have an accountant to ask.
