page rank is determined by the amount of links coming into your site/pages

more links = better pagerank

Hi Mervin

Get links from 'Higher PR' sites than your own. PR passes or 'flows' from site/page so a single PR7 inbound link could make your site a PR6 at the next PR update.

Forget PR - get good quality one way links - provide quality content on your website, spend hours reading forums, articles and learn.

I can't explain it. I have 2 sites

www.webgamesplayer.com - page rank 3
www.magsite.co.uk - page rank - zero

Not sure either?.?.

Darren, with due respect the original posters question was
"How can I increase my website page rank" which I answered fairly reasonably. The post didn't appear to be asking if PR is worth bothering about which is my understanding from your reply but I may be mistaken :-)

If you are competing against low traffic or fringe serps then I can accept that high PR value isn't really required but for any serps likely to result in high volume traffic especially in intense serps then high PR values without doubt are a part of the ranking factor.
One of the most important directories to get listed in is Dmoz, Googles own directory, interestingly Dmoz lists it's results in PR order (highest PR first lowest last) and not by relevance which is what Google does in it's search results. This to me doesn't suggest PR is not important.

I'd also say that PR is only a Google thing which impacts on Googles results but has little or no relevance on other engines, it's quite easy to get high rankings on Yahoo & Msn with very low PR sites (3/4) for 'major high volume serps'. At the end of the day making a successful and profitable business online boils down to being in the right place at the right time which in my mind is page 1 every time your customer types in your product or service and if Google deems PR as part of that process so be it.

Cheers

So if you have many 1-3 Pr sites linking to you.

But 1 high Pr site say 6-8

What kind of pr can you expect?

4 at the moment, but 18 months ago you may of got 5.

Always remember real pagerank is 0 to 10. And the google toolbar is not acurate or uptodate.

PR 1-3 sites won't do much at all in terms of helping your PR as they cannot increase your PR above theirs, a link from a PR2 site cannot make your site a PR4 per say but will count as a plus point in terms of helping your rankings as it's still a link which is effectively 'a vote towards your site' as far as engines are concerned.

Depending upon site navigation techniques and the amount of pages in a site that are actually indexed you could easily see a PR5 for your home page but whether it spreads through the rest of your site effectively is a mute point.
Navigation techniques employed through a site to connect a home page to other pages within a site will 'transfer' PR to internal pages and in doing so those pages will benefit from higher serps as long as the navigation allows this to happen. Sites using navigation code that cannot be traversed by robots will not see the spread of PR throughout their pages.
If you are only seo'ing the home page then this is not a problem but if you are expecting visitors to enter from most / all pages then friendly and effective navigation needs to be in place.

I hope this helps.

Would be nice to know which site and what the current rank is.

Improving page rank of a site that is already ranked 8 compared to improving a site with a rank of 1 would be very different projects.

True, different beasts indeed but the principal still remains. I'm presuming the posters site is 'low to very low pr' (3-1 ish) This is based upon the simple premis that if you drive a beaten up Ford car you can often wonder 'why don't I deserve better', but if you drive a Rolls Royce you tend to know exactly how you earned it.

By the way, I have a really dodgy VW Polo going if someone wants to do a swap :-)
