Hi guys. Maybe someone has experience with this issue...
I have Norton Internet Security, and lately it has stopped responding when I try to change something in the control panel (e.g. a program permission). When I shut my computer down I often get a message saying 'cApp' has stopped responding, which is part of Norton. I tried to use Symantec's scanner and troubleshooter... it stopped responding.
Outlook has stopped being able to grab my emails from this computer too, and I suspect the two problems are connected.
Any ideas before I have to spend a fortune at my local PC shop AGAIN?

Lose Norton.
Seriously - it's terrible software...
All you really need to be running is a good anti-virus software like McAfee VirusScan and an internet firewall such as ZoneAlarm. Give your machine the once-over every week or so with AdAware too.
So calles -"suites" offer little protection to your machine and just end up adding useless, resource-hogging programs.

Sorry to jump in, but I have had trouble with Norton too.
If you want to swap to another, do you un-install Norton first then put the new one in or the other way around?
Does it matter how you do it?
Thanks
Jayne :D

Uninstall Norton first. A good idea to reboot (at least once) then install the new software. :)
XP can handle a lot of abuse though. :)

I have always been told to steer clear of Norton by my Sis and BIL who are both IT, apparently it causes my problems than most other programmes!

Well, that definately means the local PC shop will lose my business.
They told me that the only way to protect my machine was to get Norton Internet Suite! So now I have shelled out that money for nothing. Grr.
Thanks for the advice though. Do you think that is the root of my email issue too?

uninstall Norton, reboot, reinstall.
If it refuses to uninstall, post back and I'll did tou a link that contains some norton removal tools.
I dislike Norton AV as well, but Symantec corporate is really good IMO.
If you have bought it, then use it, dont fork out for another AV, when it works it works pretty well.
Jayne, uninstall Norton first, reboot then install your new one.

I have had some strange experiences of Norton as well.
On my desktop the 2006 edition runs very very well and a lot faster than the 2005 edition. To be honest I am very happy with it and at £24.95 including GoBack its a bit of a steal.
However it does not want to know my lap top, which is strange as both have the same operating system and the same version of Outlook etc.

Well I have used norton AV on all my machines for a few years never had a problem. Invaribly it's some clash with something else on the machine or just a screwed machine.

Used as a standalone app, it's probably ok - but I wouldn't touch 'suites' with a barge pole! :)

No kiddin, Eagle. I will uninstall reinstall tonight and see what happens.
With outlook, I get a 'server wouldn't respond' kind of message when I try to send or recieve mail. I have tested the settings on another machine, and it works no probs. Tried deleting then recreating the account; changing port numbers; using different smtp settings etc. No difference.
