I’m thinking of producing a database tutorial CD/downloadable software, aimed at the very small business that probable has a few hundred to some thousands of records and have an understanding of excel but undoubtedly perform some time consuming manual tasks in order to try and keep the database as useable as possible. My idea is to show how to effectively de-duplicate, format and organise the data, give guidance on cheap or free software that can help with this, not to go into too much detail on how excel behaves but focus on how to get to the end result.

In my experience it’s the business owner’s who perform these tasks and have no real wish or time to understand databases.

Would it be useful to learn a few quick procedures that will improve the performance of your database?
Do you pay a data company to do this for you?
How do you fuzzy de-duplicate?
Do you screen your database against the TPS or CTPS register every 28 days as required, if so, how much are you paying?
Would you pay £50 for the tutorial or is this just a freebie that should be used as some sort of incentive?
Do you know enough to maintain you data already?
Would I have to offer support?
Should I just get on with some real work?

All feedback much appreciated.

Hi. I think you may be up against a lot of competition with this, as there are loads of websites already where people can learn how to de-duplicate their data. Indeed, it's one of my entries on my http://www.oxfordtechnotes.co.uk/sqlblog/blog4.php/2009/03/02/finding-duplicates
I'm just wondering whether you could promote your services in a different way. Perhaps have a short video showing how effective your techniques are (publish both on your site and on youtube)?
Good luck, with whichever direction you take this in.

I’m treating the lack of response to this post as this is not a product/matter of interest, get on with some real work.

Thanks to all for taking a look.

As pointed out - although it takes some searching, it can be found too easily to make is a premium product.

However, it would be a great incentive to build a marketing list by offering it as a freebie for those that register.
