I put my Strictly Admin business in the Business Directory just a couple of weeks ago and since then I have had loads of phone calls and letters...only problem is they want money off of me for advertising in phone books, local leaflets, calendars and letters from Accountants offering me their services! My business isnt even displayed in the book until the new version comes out! :(

Definately don't take them up unless you know they're bona fide - most are just scams.

I had exactly the same when I advertised on yell.com - I had many more advertisers than customers, from advertising at premiership football grounds, to memo pads where all the money went to needy children (yeah right), some are fine and accept that you dont want their services, but some just wont take no for an answer. I go into our local yellow pages in May, and whilst I'm looking forward to it, I'm also dreading it.

Yes i have had the same,

I told them we did not have the resouces to place a listing with them.
When the replied "You mean, you do not have the money to" i knew it was bogus.
I mean what an unprofessional response!

LOL...

I set up a business that didn't exist, to prove Yell did this kind of crap....and it did

should i sell the story ??

that was 18 months ago, i tell everyone to stay away unless they are a plumber, and it's part of the reason i haven't sent out a billion emails announcing my business.

Ditto. Yell.com has produced purely spam for me.

i worked for an advertising company years ago that used to get its data from yellow pages

and yes i eventually found out it was a scam

The Pitch:
"royal mail will distribute it to all the homes in your area around 100,000"

The Actual (after some research on my part):
"we will only print 100 and hand deliver them to the homes of the advertisers"

the guy i worked for was raking it in!!!

far too many like this out there
