So while checking out competition and looking at where their traffic is coming from alot is coming from testimonials so i was thinking if i could offer some testimonials to other businesses then i would benefit by having a link back to my site and also the other business could have a nicely written testimonial.
I suppose it is a silly idea but if anyone is interested send me a PM, my site is currently going through a redesign with alot of changes which will be completed by christmas so im really looking to get more traffic and up my sales
Thanks
Gemma :)

I dont think you got my point, i was thinking i could offer a testimonial saying there business did a great job for myself and therefore i get a linkback for my own site.

Am I missing something here? How can you offer a testimonial if you have not dealt with the business? ie, I would not wish to have a testimonial from you unless you have dealt with me, or you are a current Franchisee.
Kind regards.

Agreed, having a couple of fake testimonials just devalues all of your existing ones. Unless someone has genuinely comments on your product/service you shouldn't go around making comments up. By all means sell your product as best you can, if it is cheap quality then phrase it as 'economical' but don't just lie.

If you lie in business, it always comes back to " bite you on the bum". ;)
Keep straight, build a reputation, the testimonials will follow.

Ah so you weren't looking for fake testimonials, you were going to leave fake testimonials for others? Well that is much less deceitful... :|

Hi Gemma
In your first post, you did actually say offer testimonials which is why you are having people question you.
I am not very "techy", what is a backlink?
Kind regards.

It's some SEO nonsense Barbara (I'm not very techy either) but as I understand it it is pretty important with regards to search engine rankings. Part of googles infamous ranking algorithms take into account (amongst other things) how many sites link back to yours hence backlink.
Or at least that is what I am led to believe :|

Yeah. Backlinking is all to do with search engine rankings and I suppose it's also a way to pick up some page hits from the other sites (that you are backlinking from). More backlinking = better seo results.

Hi guys & girls. As regards backlinking - many people join this forum solely for that purpose. This is only a simplistic way to descibe how it works but it gives a rough idea of how backlinks can improve search engine raetings.
If Gemma got a linkback from a new web site say selling home made jumbers. It really wouldn't count much as far as Google was concerned but lets say it scored 1.
If a member from UKBF clicks on your web site then Google wakes up as it counts as 50,000 backlinks. Actually it is better than that.
If you go back to the UKBF start page you will find a section which tells you who is on-line and what thread they are following. Look carefully and as well as members names you will see the word 'crawler or spider'.
These are the search engine crawlers. That there actually seek this forum out and search every thread shows just how important a backlink from this site is.
In other words the bigger and more popular the web site linking back to you the better as far as SEO is concerned. It goes without saying then more forums you join the better.
Now for a piece of magic and please bear in mind that I am no SEO expert.
Go to the Google search box and type in " b2b silly idea" Now where is my magic wand. Whoosh. Why it's number 1 on Google. That be a £100,000 please Gemma.

It goes without saying then more forums you join the better.
Except many forums set "no follow" and most search-engines ignore the signatures - so in the main you'll get *zero* additional weighting/incoming links from forum posts.
Far more important are the *people* that might read your postings and click through - if you provide quality answers to questions/problems, that builds into something worthwhile.
Remember ... Search Engines don't but your products/services, so they are an *expense* ...
